Rehabilitation, both in Poland and in the world, is at an increasingly higher level. Year by year, rehabilitation centers modernize their methods of rehabilitation of infants and children. Rehabilitation methods are becoming more and more effective.
Many children need rehabilitation from the very first days of their lives. Not every little patient is able to learn the correct movement patterns on their own, so the help of physiotherapists who have extensive knowledge and the right approach to the patient turns out to be extremely useful.
Therapies for children
The 1940s brought a breakthrough in the rehabilitation of children and infants, because the NDT-Bobath method developed at that time gave hope for a normal future for millions of children. The earlier the therapy is started, the greater the chances of success. Physiotherapists teach parents what childcare should look like. They show how to feed them, rewind them, how to play with them. Everything is adjusted to the biological rhythm of the child, which in turn makes it much easier to learn the correct movement patterns. The type and pace of exercises are tailored to the child's needs, and the aim of the therapy is to develop the ability to adopt and maintain a correct body posture. An individual approach to each small patient makes it possible to assess the child's fitness, taking into account his psychological needs. A big advantage of the NDT-Bobath method is the possibility of treating also older patients.
Therapy with the use of rehabilitation costumes
The 1990s brought another breakthrough in rehabilitation. The idea and the idea arose in the Soviet Union during the development of astronautics and long-term space flights. The first prototype costume was called Penguin. The suit was designed to counteract the negative effects of the conditions of reduced gravity (muscular atrophy, osteoporosis) to which cosmonauts spending long periods in space were exposed. In the nineties, the costume was used for children with neuromuscular diseases.
In 1997, the TheraSuit rehabilitation suit design was introduced in the United States to facilitate the rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy. Five years later, the project was completed and introduced to the world market. TheraSuit method applies topatients who are 2.5 years old. It aims to increase physical strength and develop correct movement patterns in patients with neurological and orthopedic diseases and after injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Work in overalls is also aimed at teaching the patient to be independent in carrying out everyday activities. Research conducted in the United States shows that rehabilitation in the Thera-Suit gives faster results compared to traditional methods of therapy. TheraSuit helps the patient to "feel" his body better. A person wearing a TheraSuit knows how far his arm has to reach to grab something, knows how to put a foot to stand on a wall - in other words, he is aware of his own body. Rehabilitation in a suit improves the work of the entire nervous system, stimulates the brain and restores the correct body posture. The TheraSuit is not a therapy in itself, it is an extremely effective tool, but requires proper use. Therefore, a wide knowledge of physiotherapists in the field of other rehabilitation methods is necessary. During therapy in TheraSuit, methods such as PNF, NDT-Bobath, Manual Therapy, Kinesiotaping, TheraBand, Sensory Integration and many others are usually used.
Sensory integration
A person has 5 senses: taste, touch, smell, hearing and sight. In everyday life, the ability to process and integrate information from all five sense organs is very important. If your child reacts too strongly or too weakly to e.g. sounds, if he cannot hold a pen or cutlery properly, he is reluctant to touch certain textures or has problems with concentration, it is possible that he or she has a sensory integration disorder.
Integration Therapy The sensory experience is usually fun through learning. Classes using this method are pleasant for the child, although the little patient also has to put some effort into the tasks they perform. During the classes, various therapeutic aids are used, such as swings, balances, platforms, harnesses, skateboards and many others. Thanks to the Sensory Integration Therapy, it improves, among others, concentration and attention of the child. In addition, his visual and auditory abilities also sharpen. The little patient also gains greater self-awareness and self-esteem.
Music therapy
One of the equally interesting forms of therapy is the method of prof. Tomatis. It is a therapy involving the use of computer-modified music (usually classical), the listening to which improves the work of the brain and has a positive effect on all cognitive functions:memory, attention, concentration, communication skills, and emotional stability. While listening to music, the patient can sleep, play or draw - so he feels relaxed and calm. Therapy of prof. Tomatisa also helps you learn foreign languages.
