Guest / holiday dialysis allows people with kidney problems to travel all over the world. Before you leave, however, do not forget to send your he alth information to the dialysis center of your choice! Check what formalities you need to complete before receiving dialysis away from home.

Guest / holiday dialysisthese allow people with kidney diseases to travel. Thanks to dialysis, over 12,000 people live in Poland. The patient's lifestyle changes radically - it is determined by continuous, five-hour treatments three times a week, on average. Many people believe that these time constraints will forever chase the patient to a single location near the dialysis center where he or she is being treated. In percentage, still few patients in Poland use the optionof dialysis outside their place of residence . It probably results from strong habits conditioned by the difficult situation in our country, still in the recent past. It was only thanks to the development of the network of non-public dialysis centers that 2004 was the first year when no patient had to wait for dialysis treatment.

What should you consider when choosing a dialysis center?

In a conversation with a competent person, ask the following questions:

  • Does the station only use disposable dialyzers?
  • Does reuse bloodlines?
  • what is the duration of the dialysis session?
  • Will the drugs prescribed by our doctor be used? (erythropoietin, intravenous iron preparations);
  • at what time can we be dialyzed?
  • what types of dialyzers are used?
  • What types of dialysis machines are used for treatment?
  • Are you allowed to eat meals during the dialysis session?
  • What are the options for transport to and from the station?

Dunka, whose family comes from Pomerania, has a favorite place of vacation on the Polish coast of the B altic Sea. Chronic kidney disease doesn't stop her from planning. He uses guest dialysis at the Fresenius - INCP station in Wejherowo. - Poles are slowly breaking the patterns of dialysis, patients more and more often decide to go on holiday trips - says Teresa Nadolny, director of the Wejherowo station. - Vacation is not a whim. Changing the environment, a trip to he althy regions of the country give great therapeutic effects.Active patients find it easier to deal with the daily burdens of a chronic disease - she adds. During last year's vacation, a total of 30 people benefited from guest dialysis at the Wejherowo station. Most of them stayed in the nearby he alth resorts - Jurata, Jastarnia, and Jastrzębia Góra. Pursuant to the contract with the National He alth Fund, the station provides them with free access for dialysis. Vacationers also have the option of arranging convenient dialysis hours - e.g. on the third shift from 6.00 pm to 11.00 pm, which allows patients to take full advantage of the sun and sea attractions.

When planning a vacation trip, you should first consult the idea with your doctor. After a positive medical opinion, it is time for further preparations - searching for a dialysis station close to the destination of rest and contacting the selected facility to arrange dialysis dates. A patient going abroad should also report to the Provincial Department of the National He alth Fund to obtain the European He alth Insurance Card and the necessary documents.

What should I remember if I need dialysis before leaving?

In preparing the patient for the trip, the attending physician should prepare information about the patient's he alth condition and the method of treatment. This information should be sent to the selected dialysis center before departure, and the patient should take a copy with him. Properly prepared information should include:

  • personal data (including blood group);
  • expected period of stay;
  • short medical history and current description of the physical examination;
  • dry body weight;
  • latest laboratory test results;
  • recent EKG;
  • description of the last radiological examination of the chest;
  • dialysis parameters (time, concentrate type, blood flow rate, average ultrafiltration rate);
  • type of dialyzer used;
