Behind the door, in the former courtroom, the old stairs that lead directly to the dungeons have been preserved in excellent condition. Keep it close!

Kaunas - priceless monuments

WKaunasthere are three class 0 monuments. One is the late gothic house of Perkun (or Piorun, the most important god of pagan Lithuanians). 20 different brick profiles were used for its construction. Initially, the house was a warehouse of a we althy merchant, later it served as a chapel and a Jesuit school. It currently houses a small museum dedicated toAdam Mickiewicz . In the cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, the largest Gothic monument in Lithuania, it is worth paying attention to the beautiful wooden altar. The oldestmonumentKaunas is the castle, erected in the 13th century at the mouth of the river Neris to the Nemunas. Only two of the four towers have survived to this day. The area around the castle is the favorite walking and recreation area of ​​Kaunas residents.

Following Mickiewicz in Kaunas

Our bard worked in Kaunas in the years 1819-1823. He had to work off the university scholarship at the local school. He was not happy with it. The city had then 13 thousand. inhabitants, it was not attractive for the young man. He lived outside the city in the Kartofliszki farm, in a room lined with newspapers. The lack of friends and other entertainment had a positive effect on his work. Here he wrote "Oda", "Grażyna", "Dziady" and many other works. It is said that he was looking for inspiration in a gray tenement house by the market square, where the beautiful town girl Karolina Kowalska lived.

Pharmacy Museum in Kaunas

In the rooms of the Pharmacy Museum in Kaunas there are many interesting exhibits, incl. equipment for the production of many drugs and tinctures, including the famous 999 tincture made on 27 herbs. The taste and effectiveness of the tincture were described by both Adam Mickiewicz and Melchior Wańkowicz. Also today, three nines are treated as an irreplaceable medicine for many diseases, especially of the digestive system.
