You are pregnant, looking at the Christmas Eve table full of treats and wondering if you can afford to be greedy since cabbage and mushrooms cause gas and fried carp is hard to digest. What can you eat on Christmas Eve if you are pregnant or breastfeeding so as not to harm yourself or your baby?

At first glance, it seems thaton Christmas EveandChristmasmamapregnantis in a much better situation than the one who has already given birth and is breastfeeding, because she can eat as much as she wants and without consequences. However, you should eat with caution even during pregnancy, as flatulence and abdominal pain can cause an increase in pressure in the abdominal cavity, which results in a deterioration of well-being.

If you are feeding, remember that what you eat passes into the milk and into the digestive tract of your baby. Therefore, you should - at least at the beginning ofbreastfeeding- be particularly careful about the quality of your diet. The well-being of a baby depends largely on the mother's menu. Such ailments appear quickly, even after a one-time irritation of a child's delicate intestine, and it is very difficult to treat them. Therefore, it is better to prevent them.

Christmas Eve - what can you eat during holidays if you are pregnant or breastfeeding?

Red borscht and beetroot dishes - eat as often as possible during pregnancy

Christmas Eve is associated primarily with red borscht with dumplings. Beets - the main raw material of this dish - contain a large amount of minerals, calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, and their intense red color is due to anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that protect against cancer.

Boiled beetroot is a good source of folic acid, which is essential for the proper development of the fetus. They are recommended in the diet of people at risk of anemia, and this is a common affliction of pregnant women.

The expectant mother can also drink beetroot juice, which prevents obstruction, which often torments pregnant women. So if you are expecting a baby, red borscht or boiled beetroot in the form of a cold or warm saladyou can eat as much as you want.

However, when you are breastfeeding, pay attention to the seasoning of red borscht and any beetroot dishes (acidify them with apple juice, not vinegar!).

Important
  • Before you choose something from the Christmas Eve menu, pay attention to how these dishes are prepared. Give preference to cooked dishes over fried ones, avoid flavored with vinegar and spicy.
  • If you have eaten too much or you have flatulence, have a glass of fennel tea or a light infusion of chamomile or mint. They act as a diastolic, carminative and aid digestion.

Christmas carp and herring - avoid fried fish and fish in vinegar during pregnancy

Fish, especially carp, must not be missing on the Christmas Eve table. Fish meat provides valuable, easily digestible protein and vitamins (B vitamins and vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E).

It is rich in minerals (phosphorus, sulfur, chlorine, potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium and iron) and trace elements (zinc, copper, manganese and iodine). However, fish is primarily an excellent source of omega-3 and omega-6 unsaturated fatty acids (EFAs). The highest amounts of EFAs are contained in the meat of marine fish, especially fatty species (salmon, mackerel, herring, sprat, sardine).

During pregnancy, you should not only eat fish, including carp. And here the way of preparation is also important: remember that fried fish in breadcrumbs is a difficult dish to digest. However, the traditional Greek style fish, made of boiled fish, which is translated into carrots, parsley, celery, is highly recommended.

If you love herring, the better ones will be milder for you - in the s alted version, with spices (herring in vinegar is not recommended because acetic acid is not an ally of red blood cells). Jelly fish, boiled or stewed, is also a great idea.

On the other hand, a nursing mother should avoid herring in vinegar, smoked salmon, and fried carp. Such dishes can harm your baby. However, you can safely reach for carp in jelly, boiled, grilled or baked fish in foil.

Christmas bigos and dumplings - be moderate during pregnancy

Cabbage for Christmas Eve and Christmas tables is traditionally prepared in the form of stew or stewed cabbage with prunes, raisins and mushrooms. Fish dishes also go perfectly with a white or red cabbage salad.

What do the different varieties of cabbage contain? In terms of vitamin C content, this vegetable is as good as lemon. It is also richer in minerals than other vegetables. Red cabbage is rich in anthocyanins, while savoy and cabbagePekingese are delicate and crisp - perfect for salads. Unfortunately, you have to remember that cabbage dishes, especially sauerkraut, are hard to digest and bloat.

If you are pregnant, you can reach for dishes stuffed with cabbage, but it's better to be moderate in eating braised cabbage with mushrooms. Cabbage salad should not hurt, at most they will cause a little bloating in the abdomen.

When you want a salad, make it with Chinese cabbage. If you are feeding, refrain from eating braised cabbage and stew, but one dumpling or patty won't hurt you or your baby.

Christmas Eve dishes with mushrooms: be careful pregnant, give up if you feed

Mushrooms are an indispensable ingredient of Christmas Eve dishes. Together with cabbage, they are the main ingredient of stuffing. Mushrooms provide protein, carbohydrates and small amounts of fat. They are rich in B and D vitamins and small amounts of vitamin C.

They contain calcium, potassium and phosphorus compounds, as well as valuable elements: magnesium, iron, fluorine, copper, manganese, cob alt, titanium, and cytostatic substances (inhibiting the growth of cancer cells).

If you know the source of the mushrooms, you can eat them while pregnant. However, it is worth maintaining moderation, because they are hard to digest. If you do feed, better avoid mushrooms - their fruiting bodies can be contaminated.

Beans and peas - if you are breastfeeding, avoid rather

They appear on the Christmas Eve table, for example as cabbage with peas or beans with sauce. Peas and beans are a valuable source of protein. In addition, legume seeds contain starch, valuable fatty acids, dietary fiber and B vitamins.

They also contain macro- and microelements, including: sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron, cob alt, phosphorus, as well as nicotinic acid and pantothenic acid. However, beans and peas have a certain disadvantage - the oligosaccharides present in them are not digested by the enzymes of the human digestive tract. They are broken down by bacteria in the large intestine, producing gas that causes gas.

The mother-to-be and the mother-to-be feeding the legume seed dish may be harmful. Hence, it is worth trying a method of preparation that will remove some of the fermenting carbohydrates from the seeds: pour the seeds in boiling water and leave for 3 hours at room temperature, then drain the water, pour the seeds with fresh water and cook uncovered.

Dishes with beans and peas should also be seasoned with, for example, marjoram or caraway seeds. If during pregnancy, after eating such a dish prepared in this way, you do not have flatulence - you can eat Christmas Eve dishes made of legumes, but when you are feeding, you should rather refrain from eatingpeas and beans.

Christmas cakes - in moderation during pregnancy and while nursing

If you're pregnant, there's no reason not to try all the sweets - in moderation, of course. From a dietary point of view, there are no contraindications to eating sweets, but it is worth remembering that they provide unnecessary calories. Delicacies are a great alternative to them.

For a nursing mother, yeast dough, small amounts of poppy seed cake and other desserts with the addition of poppy seeds, and cider are safe. Avoid heavy cakes with creams, dried fruit and cocoa. Also, if the child is small, it is better not to eat the cheesecake, because the lactose and casein contained in it can cause discomfort in the child. It is also worth refraining from eating chocolate and carefully reaching for nuts (they are allergenic). However, dried apricots and raisins are safe.
