If you go for walks with your dog every day, you have actually started training for a sports discipline calleddogtrekking .

It is a form of recreation available to everyone who has a dog, as it does not require special skills. It is simply a longer walk with the dog or a field trip over a distance of several to several dozen kilometers.

Dogtrekking - how to train?

Workouts can be started by gradually extending the time of daily walks. A two-hour walk with your dog a few times a week will help you improve your form and may be the beginning of an adventure with dogtrekking.

Additionally, from time to time you can go on a longer trip to the mountains or to a place with small hills. This allows you to increase the difficulty of the route and improve the condition of the future participant.

On the walking routes you need to choose only natural paths without asph alt. Forest trails or low mountain trails are the best. During the expeditions, it is necessary to bring water for you and your dog, as well as appropriate clothes adapted to the weather conditions. Don't forget to choose the right trekking shoes. Ideally, they should be comfortable and have appropriate technologies that improve the comfort of walking in a varied terrain.

Dogtrekking - equipment for a dog

It is recommended that the dog wears a harness to which a shock-absorbing rope should be attached instead of a leash. Its task is to eliminate jerks that are unpleasant for the dog. The other end of the rope is attached to the rider's hip belt (as used in canicross).

If the route passes through more difficult mountain terrain, dog shoes will be useful to prevent paw injuries.

It is also necessary to have sufficient water and food for the pet.

Dogtrekking - skills

The basic skill necessary to participate in dogtrekking is the minimum basic knowledge of the map and handlingcompass, because the routes are not always marked (e.g. through the forest).

How is dogtrekking different from a regular walk?

The difference is mainly in the length of the route. Virtually every he althy person can walk the shorter ones - 15-20 km long. But traveling 40 km already requires good condition.

A dog, provided it is not a typical sandworm, will easily cover a designated distance if it is fed regularly. Even chihuahuas can be defeated by Polish dogtrekking without any problems.

This will be useful to you

People who would like to take part in the competition after training, are encouraged to participate in the Polish Dogtrekking Cup. For beginners, a shorter route of 15 km has been prepared.
