Gyrotonic method - what is it?
The Gyrotonic method is a popular exercise system in the USA that combines many different techniques and training styles, incl. yoga, dancing, gymnastics, tai-chi and even swimming. The exercises are performed on a special gyrotonic machine. This training system is about controlling your breathing and increasing your body awareness by making smooth and deep movements and focusing on the correct exercise technique.
Gyrotonic allows you to restore the body's internal balance, regain peace and increase the mobility of stagnant joints and muscles.
This method is not widely known in Poland yet, but it breaks popularity records in the United States! Interestingly, the gyrotonic method is most often chosen by pregnant or puerperal women, because it allows you to stay he althy and in good physical shape, and it perfectly restores the efficiency of the locomotor system. People who lead a sedentary lifestyle and those who are in the rehabilitation process are also willing to use gyrotonic.
Gyrotonic method - how does the exercise machine work and what are the classes?
The originator of the gyrotonic method is Juliu Horvath of Hungary, who was a professional dancer and soloist at the New York Opera and The Huston Ballet, among others. The dancer suffered from chronic backache caused by degeneration of the joints and repeated injuries. All this made Horvath start to think about his own exercise system that could ease his pains and improve his fitness without putting him at risk of further ailments. This is how he came up with the gyrotonic method and work on the training machine, which he disseminated in the proprietary White Cloud studio in the USA.
The gyrotonic machine activates the body in the seven natural planes of the spine's movement: forward bends, backward bends, left and right bends, and left and right turns as well as circular motion. The devices in the machine reflect the movements we make in the water or while swimming, so they effectively relieve the body.
What does the gyrotonic machine consist of? It consists of several devices. The base of the equipment is a tower made of leather and wood. Also attached to it are dumbbells, ropes and pulleys that make up the entire machine system.
In the rehabilitation of the spine, shoulders, elbows or wrists, a machine called gyrotoner is also useful, which is a special platform for people recovering from injuries and injuries. What's more, people taking part in the gyrotonic method can use a board for stretching exercises and a ladder designed for leg gymnastics.
What does gyrotonic training look like? The training is conducted under the constant supervision of a teacher who must have a valid license to conduct classes issued by GYROTONIC® International Headquarters, Pennsylvania, USA. The program of classes is arranged globally and in each facility the same training scheme should apply in accordance with the GYROTONIC® EXPANSION SYSTEM program.
Single classes usually last one hour, with a 10-minute warm-up before them. At the beginning, a technique called "scrubing" is usually used, in which the work of the circulatory and lymphatic systems is improved with the use of a towel or a natural sponge with a special massage. This allows you to get rid of toxins and dead cells and warm up the nervous system. After this short self-massage, proper training begins, which gradually introduces more and more demanding elements. It starts with stabilizing and improving the mobility of all sections of the spine in order to stimulate it to work dynamically.
At the beginning, small ranges of movements are performed, which gradually stimulate the nervous system, and at the same time - the fascial system to work. All of them will be used in trainingtendons in the body according to the anatomy and the deepest possible movement in the joint. During the exercises, proper breathing will be extremely important, which will guide us through the training.
The cost of a single lesson is PLN 250, and the introductory lesson is about PLN 150. You can also meet with time modifications and a slightly lower cost of classes, which is selected individually by the facility that offers gyrotonic classes (e.g. PLN 130 for 2 hours of classes).
Gyrotonic method - what are the exercises?
Exercises using the gyrotnic method are referred to as rehabilitation and physiotherapy, so they have an excellent effect on the entire motor system. Exercises with a gyrotonic machine keep all joints moving. Importantly, training also has a beneficial effect on the muscles - it increases their strength and endurance.
The exercise system developed in the mid 70's focuses on strengthening and stretching the body at the same time, which gives it agility and strength at the same time. Many of the exercises created by Juliu Horvath use circular motion to integrate body and mind more easily - senses and feeling are extremely important during this training! Thanks to this, we gain relaxation, we feel deep relaxation, and the pains and unpleasant sensations coming from the body earlier, magically disappear.
The sequences of the gyrotonic method are based on four main principles: intention, stability, decompression and coordination. Intention directs the body to where we want and improves the functions of this place, stabilization focuses on placing the locomotor apparatus and providing it with the necessary safety, decompression causes the joints to move freely as in water, and coordination harmonizes breathing with proper movement.
Moreover, gyrotonic training teaches how to avoid tensions in the body and how to consciously use energy to give the body and movement lightness and strength.
Gyrotonic exercises will be beneficial if practiced two to three times a week for about one hour.
Gyrotonic method - for whom?
Gyrotonic is the perfect exercise system for those who suffer from chronic and bothersome pains in joints and soft tissues such as ligaments, tendons and muscles. The training will be perfect for people with a history of back injuries, and also in the case of degenerative spine disease.
Importantly, gyrotonic training is also suitable for pregnant women and mothers who want to get back in shape after giving birth. Gyrotonic is a safe way to lose unnecessary kilograms and preserve or regain temporarily lost fitness.
There is alsomajor contraindications for obese people not to benefit from this exercise technique.
And finally - gyrotonic is a training method for everyone. If you like to try new things, you want to improve our mobility and body functionality, and you dream of sculpted muscles and a beautiful figure, the gyrotonic method is just for you.
