Infection with Ureaplasma urealyticum is very dangerous and, if left untreated, can lead to serious consequences. In men it can turn into prostatitis, and in women into inflammation of the ovaries, fallopian tubes and cervix. Women are also at risk of miscarriage. If a woman becomes infected during pregnancy, the bacteria may be transferred to the newborn during childbirth.

Ureaplasma urealyticum - diagnosis

This bacterium is a microorganism that is difficult to diagnose and requires long-term cultivation on special substrates. PCR techniques are used in diagnostics, which confirm the presence of the pathogen in the tested material. Ureaplasma urealyticum can be identified in topically collected materials, such as urethral or cervical swabs, as well as urine.

Ureaplasma urealyticum - treatment

In the case of infection with this bacterium, antibiotic therapy is used, which is very effective and gives a chance for complete recovery. Tetracyclines or erythromycins are used to treat ureaplasma urealyticum.

Important

The sperm of men infected with the bacterium are less mobile and contain a greater number of abnormal sperm. A relationship between Ureaplasma urealyticum and infections can also be observed with high probabilityfemale and male infertility, premature births, delayed fetal development, and low weight of the child in the neonatal period.
