Asthma reminds you often in the fall. Autumn asthma attacks most often affect children and are caused by infections, allergies and stress. What to do in the event of an asthma exacerbation in the fall? Can this be prevented?

Autumn asthma exacerbationis a problem that mainly affects children. Little asthmatics with exacerbation of their disease come to the emergency room and clinic every day. The immediate reason isviral infectionsoccurring at this time of year. Seeing a doctor as soon as possible is the only way to protect your child from an asthma attack.

Causes of autumn asthma attacks

As every year at this time, the number of viral infections is growing rapidly. Fall infection is a kind of "trigger" for people with asthma - which can cause severe breathlessness, often resulting in a visit to the emergency room. Autumn asthma exacerbations usually have several reasons. The most important of them are the already mentioned infections, mainly rhinoviruses and allergies. They are responsible for approx. 80 percent. asthma exacerbations. In addition, in the case of children, going back to school is also a meeting with new allergens and stress. Some parents believe that their children do not need asthma treatment while they are on vacation. And irregular treatment can also make the disease worse.

With asthma exacerbation see your doctor

- Every day at the end of September we see children with exacerbation of asthma. Often in serious condition. This situation could have been avoided if the parents had seen their GP or pediatrician before the child had a cold. The implementation of appropriate treatment should protect the child from the attack of the disease - says Dr. Teresa Marek-Szydłowska, head of the children's department of the He althcare Center of the Ministry of Interior and Administration in Krakow. The same opinion is shared by prof. Rafał Pawliczak from the Medical University of Lodz - The analysis of statistical data from many European and North American countries has clearly shown: at the end of September, the number of asthma exacerbations in children is increasing dramatically. This phenomenon has just been dubbed the "September asthma epidemic".

Asthma medications must be taken constantly

The causes of dangerous asthma exacerbations in children, such as a cold, are difficult to eliminate. However, this risk can be significantly reduced by taking your child to the doctor who will select the appropriate drugs andmethod of therapy. Chronic use of anti-inflammatory drugs is the key to successful asthma treatment. One of the groups of these drugs, the so-called anti-leukotriene drugs are effective in preventing asthma exacerbations caused by viruses. The September visit to the pediatrician or family doctor should become a habit for parents of children with asthma.
