Washing nuts is a natural detergent picked straight from the tree - it makes washing ecological, without the addition of chemicals and fragrances. This is why washing nuts seem to be made for allergy sufferers. How to use washing nuts and in what cases will they be used? Are washing nuts really effective?
Washing nutscome from India and Nepal, where they have been used for centuries as an ideal detergent for washing, softening and disinfecting water. Washing nut shells contain the so-called saponins, a type of detergent that degreases, washes and cleans. When the shells come in contact with water, the natural soap separates and forms a mild soapy solution.
Washing nuts are an excellent alternative to traditional washing agents - powders, liquids or capsules. They are completely natural and do not irritate, so they are tolerated by the skin of most allergy sufferers. They can be used for washing clothes and fabrics that come into contact with the delicate skin of a newborn and a person suffering from atopic dermatitis - in the latter case, however, it is worth monitoring carefully whether an adverse reaction appears after some time.
Washing Nuts: Application
Washing nuts , as the name suggests, is mainly used for washing clothes - by hand and in a washing machine. They are also used for washing dishes in the dishwasher - it is recommended to use five nuts and place them, for example, in a cutlery compartment.
Washing nuts are also used in the care of dogs and cats - they have insecticidal properties, so they are suitable for bathing pets, do not irritate the skin and do not cause allergies.
They can also be used for cleaning - a decoction of nutshells (boil a dozen shells for a few minutes in 750 ml of water, then strain and pour the liquid into a bottle) can be diluted with water or poured directly on a cloth and cleaned with everyday items use, including toys.
And finally - washing nuts can be used for body care - the saponins contained in the shells are assigned… anti-stress properties. A decoction of nut shells effectively reduces joint pain and has an anti-dandruff effect. Therefore, it is worth pouring washing nut decoction into the bath from time to time (approx.30-50 ml).
Some people also use washing nuts in the garden - saponins are supposed to protect plants thanks to their strong antibacterial, protozoal, antifungal and antiviral properties. It is enough to spray the leaves and stems of the plants with the decoction of nut shells.
Washing nuts: how to use?
Machine wash
How to use nuts to wash clothes? About 5 to 6 half of the crushed shells should be put into a cotton bag and put directly into the drum with colorful and white clothes at a temperature of 30oC to 90oC.
If you wash white items, remember to add 1.5 tablespoons of baking soda to keep the laundry from going gray.
Nuts can remain in the washing machine until the end of the wash cycle. During rinsing, the water is cold and often renewed. Little saponins are released in this phase. This small amount allows you to soften the laundry.
Hand wash
About 3-4 crushed shells are kept in hot water for 15 minutes, then cooled to the appropriate temperature and washed as with a traditional hand-washing liquid. Put the nuts into a cotton bag and place them in a bowl together with the laundry.
Washing nut shells are a full-value, purely biological detergent that is very gentle to dyes. They are effective regardless of the washing temperature, both in hand washing and in a washing machine.
Washing nuts: are they effective?
Although the eco-friendliness and economy of washing nuts are often emphasized, and many people say that they work great with them, there is an equally numerous, if not more numerous, group of users who are not entirely satisfied with the effects of washing nuts.
They indicate, among others the characteristic scent of washing nuts, which may not suit everyone, and which sometimes remains on fabrics after washing. To overcome this effect, add a little essential oil to your laundry in your favorite fragrance.
Washing nuts are not always good at washing white fabrics - so it is worth adding a portion of baking soda to the wash, which will give a whitening effect and prevent clothes from turning gray.
However, the biggest objection to washing nuts is their low effectiveness in removing stains. While they can cope with light stains on white clothes (after adding baking soda), stronger stains, e.g. on the toes and heels of socks, sweat stains, may not be removed. Similarly with colored fabrics and denim, to which it is difficult to add baking soda so as not to discolor them.
Therefore, when purchasing washing nuts for the first time, it is worth choosing a smaller amount or, for example, borrowing the product from friends or family.
When nuts lose their detergent properties?
Washing nuts are very efficient. When washing at a temperature of up to 30 °, one portion is enough for about four washes, at 40 ° for two to three, at 60 ° for two washes, and when washing at 90o- for one thing. Nuts can be used until the saponin is completely rinsed out - then they turn lighter, lose their original gloss and stick. Initially, nuts are also hard, but over time - after repeated use - they soften.
How much do washing nuts cost?
A kilogram of washing nuts costs - depending on the place of purchase - from 18 to even 40 PLN. One kg of washing nuts can be washed from 160 to 180 washes.
