Hemorrhoids in pregnancyis a problem faced by almost half of women. It is caused by problems with regular bowel movements and frequent constipation. It is influenced by hormones - more active in pregnancy, which make digestion and excretion slower in pregnant women. In addition, the enlarging uterus puts pressure on the intestines and veins in the abdominal cavity. This makes it difficult for blood to drain out of the pelvis and legs. And the problem is ready.

Hemorrhoids in pregnancy: causes

These are haemorrhoids located in the submucosa in the anal canal. They look like little pillows densely woven from blood vessels. They improve the tightness of the anus, so that the gases that arise in the intestines during digestion of food do not escape.

Sometimes it happens that the hemorrhoids get too large. Then they make themselves known. Unfortunately, painfully. You start to feel itchy around your anus more and more.

Then there is bleeding from overloaded and swollen veins surrounding the sphincter muscles.

And progesterone (the hormone your body produces a lot right now) makes the walls of your veins less bouncy. This is why they easily spread and the lumps start to burst and bleed.

Hemorrhoids in pregnancy: prophylaxis

First of all, take care of proper bowel movements. If constipation appears in the first few months of pregnancy, change your diet as soon as possible.

First, drink a lot. The fluids loosen the fecal matter, thus facilitating its excretion.

Second, go for foods that contain fiber. These wonderful plant fibers travel throughout the digestive system and are not digestible, but they absorb toxins and water. So eat plenty of vegetables and fruits, brown bread, brown rice and groats. For a snack between meals, choose prunes, apricots, apples, kiwi andpanties.

By following these simple recommendations, after a few days you will notice that your intestines are working much faster and that you have less trouble with bowel movements. Perhaps you will soon forget constipation and avoid the trouble of hemorrhoids, or at least delay their appearance.

Ways to treat hemorrhoids in pregnancy

If you failed to protect yourself against hemorrhoids, now, during pregnancy, first of all take care of regular bowel movements. But don't sit on the toilet for a long time, as this puts pressure on the already over-dilated veins and more lumps may appear as a result.

  • Why isn't sitting on the toilet a good position to defecate?

Places that hurt and burn you, wash with cold water and liquid soap intended for pregnant women. The infusion of oak bark, which has anti-inflammatory properties, also gives good effects. In the pharmacy, you will also find a ready-made herbal gel for anal hygiene.

The calendula ointment is worth recommending, as it moisturizes and strengthens the skin.

And with bleeding hemorrhoids, warm compresses from a damp tea bag will bring relief. Tea leaves contain tannic acid, which has an astringent effect and seals small mornings.

Unpleasant symptoms can also be alleviated by a warm bath, but it must be short, 10-15 minutes at most. However, any sitz baths are contraindicated during pregnancy.

You must do it
  • Raise your legs above your body as you relax. After several minutes, the pain and itching should be less severe. Also take care of physical activity and exercise. Movement not only helps you relax, it also helps prevent digestive problems.
  • To reduce the swelling, you can make a pack of ice cubes or use special gel pads (available at the pharmacy), which, after cooling, are applied to the area of the anus.

Hemorrhoids in pregnancy: treatment

If the symptoms persist, go to the pharmacy. The pharmacist will tell you which rectal ointments or suppositories are safe to use.

Most of these remedies contain natural ingredients, mainly horse chestnut extracts and rutin. However, it is better to check if the drug in question is suitable for pregnant women. This information can be found on the product packaging or in the information leaflet.

However, if your hemorrhoids still keep you awake at night, be sure to see a doctor. A specialist who deals with such problems is a proctologist.

If the disease is very advanced, then no ointments and suppositories will help you. Then the doctor may recommend sclerotherapy (that is, injection of drugs that causefibrosis of the nodules), putting on special elastic bands around the nodule or coagulation with infrared or ultraviolet rays.

However, these methods are unlikely to be used during pregnancy, unless in a very advanced disease.

Fortunately, hemorrhoids disappear on their own within a few months after giving birth. Unfortunately, they have a tendency to regenerate during subsequent pregnancies or long-lasting constipation.

What are hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are the widening of the veins in the rectum, at the end of the anus. Each of us has these veins. However, the problem begins when there is increased pressure in the system of these veins, when there is blood stagnation in this area or abnormalities in the structure of the vessels. What causes hemorrhoids? Can their appearance be prevented? These questions are answered by our expert - surgeon Jacek Waligóra from Medicover Hospital in Warsaw.
