Marijuana can negatively affect a man's fertility, even if only his partner is a smoker. How does marijuana reduce a man's fertility and how does a woman smoking "weed" contribute to it? Check what is the impact of the THC compound in marijuana on the quality and activity of sperm and, as a result, on male fertility.
Marijuanacontains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a chemical that interferes with the proper functioning of male reproductive cells. It interferes with the correct signals that are sent by special cannabinoid receptors to the sperm so that it can give them the wrong command. In this way, it activates them too early and makes them use up all their energy needed for the fertilization of the egg in the male testicles or in the female genital tract.
Marijuana causes male infertility
Doctors suspect that marijuana disrupts the normal activity of sperm, which, instead of saving the energy needed for the long journey to the egg and flowing slowly, are very energetic, even hyperactive. Therefore, once they reach their destination, they are too exhausted to penetrate the outer shell of the egg and fertilize it.
In addition, high concentrations of THC cause deformations in the composition of enzymes in sperm, especially in the acrosome. The acrosome is a "container" that holds the enzymes that are released into the sperm when it comes in contact with the egg, allowing them to connect to each other. Abnormalities in acrosomes prevent fertilization.
To sum up, marijuana in regular smokers can:
- contribute to the production of less sperm,
- reduce the volume of seminal fluid,
- contribute to the production of sperm of inferior quality (also with damaged DNA).
Marijuana can also cause orgasm problems and provoke the development of testicular cancer.
How can marijuana smoking by women contribute to infertility?
THC can fill a woman's genital tract and create an unfavorable environment for sperm. As a result, he althy sperm that reaches the vagina are exposed to THC just like the sperm found in a marijuana smoker testes. Once fertilized, THCit can make it difficult for an embryo to implant in the uterus or interfere with the development of a fertilized egg. THC also often disrupts the ovulation cycle and causes irregular periods.
These are only speculations by some physicians, however, as the European Urological Society has not included marijuana among the compounds that have any effect on fertility. Doctors have also not confirmed whether quitting marijuana can restore fertility levels.
Similar properties also havemarijuana seeds(feminized, both indoor seeds, outdoor seeds, as well as autoflowering seeds).
