Seniors are at a higher risk when it comes to COVID-19 mortality. The GIS made special recommendations for the elderly, who should now take extra care of themselves.
According to WHO in the analysis of COVID-19 infection cases, people over 65 are one of the groups most vulnerable to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Older people have lower immunity and suffer from other diseases more often. That is why the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate has issued a special announcement for seniors, which includes recommendations on how to deal with the coronavirus epidemic.

GIS reminds that large clusters of people are an environment conducive to the spread of coronavirus and other viruses transmitted by airborne droplets. Therefore, if possible, you should limit your stay in public places and ask your relatives for help in everyday activities, such as shopping, supplying medicines, running errands in offices, at the post office, or going to churches.
GIS recommendations for seniors - hygiene
The main recommendations are hygiene and are the same as for everyone:
- Wash your hands often. Remember to wash your hands frequently with soap and water, and if this is not possible, disinfect them with alcohol-based liquids / gels (min. 60%). There is a risk of virus transmission from contaminated surfaces on the hands. Therefore, frequent hand washing reduces the risk of contamination.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Hands touch many surfaces that may be contaminated with the virus. Touching your eyes, nose or mouth with contaminated hands may spread the virus from the surface to yourself.
- Regularly clean or disinfect touch surfaces. Touch surfaces, including desks, counters and tables, door handles, light switches, and handrails, must be regularly wiped with water and a detergent or disinfectant. All places that are often used by household members should be carefully disinfected.
- Disinfect your phone regularly and do not use it while eating. Pathogenic microorganisms can easily accumulate on the surface of cell phones. Disinfect yours regularlya mobile phone (e.g. wet wipes soaked in a disinfectant). Do not put the phone on the table and do not use it while eating.
- Keep a safe distance from the other party. Keep at least 4-5 meters away from anyone who is coughing, sneezing or having a fever.
- Take precautionary measures to protect yourself when you sneeze and cough. When coughing and sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with a bent elbow or a tissue - throw the handkerchief into a closed bin as soon as possible and wash your hands using soap and water or disinfect them with alcohol-based agents (min. 60%). Covering your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing prevents the spread of germs, including viruses.

GIS Recommendations for Seniors - Nutrition
Seniors should also take special care of he althy nutrition and hydration of the body:
- Use a balanced diet.
- Avoid highly processed foods.
- Remember to eat a minimum of 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day.
- Drink approx. 2 liters of liquids (preferably water) every day.

Shopping for seniors
With seniors in mind, restrictions have also been introduced to minimize contact between older people and younger people who may be asymptomatic carriers of the coronavirus. In order to avoid contamination by seniors, special hours have been set for elderly people to do shopping. From 10:00 to 12:00 the stores are open only to seniors.
Seniors can also ask for help with shopping. Recently, more and more photos of messages posted by tenants in their staircases in which they offer help to their elderly neighbors have appeared on social media. "Dear neighbors and seniors! If you prefer not to leave the house due to the coronavirus, knock on number 77. We will be happy to do your shopping or go to the pharmacy "- such a card was displayed on one of the cages in the block of flats.
GIS recommendations for seniors - proven sources of knowledge
GIS recommends using proven sources of knowledge about the coronavirus, which are published on the websites of the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate and the Ministry of He alth. There, everyone will find verified information based on scientific evidence on the COVID-19 epidemic. In this way, you can avoid many anxieties, which are a natural reflex in the event of a he alth emergency.
