XYY Super Male Syndrome is a genetic disease that only men contend with. Contrary to its name, in some cases it can lead to problems with sex drive and even infertility. What are the causes and symptoms of super male syndrome? What is the treatment of super male XYY syndrome?

XYY super male syndrome , otherwiseJacobs syndromeorovermen,is a genetic disease, o which can be said when a pair of male chromosomes, XY, has an additional Y chromosome. By default, a male has 46 chromosomes, but as a result of this genetic abnormality their number increases to 47.

According to data from the National Institutes of He alth, 0.1% of the male population suffers from super male syndrome. Unlike super female syndrome, the risk of developing the disease does not increase with the age of the mother.

Super male syndrome - causes

The cause of the supermen syndrome is a chromosomal aberration that arose during the formation of the male genetic code. This abnormality consists in the presence of an additional Y chromosome in the XY chromosome pair.

Super male XYY syndrome - symptoms

  • above average growth
  • hypotension (state of decreased muscle tone)
  • severe acne in adolescence
  • learning disabilities (IQ can average 10-15 points lower than peers)
  • behavior problems - impulsivity, aggression and lack of empathy (in some men)

Although men with an extra Y chromosome may have a delayed process of puberty, it is usually normal. That is why patients struggling with super male syndrome usually do not have fertility problems.

The characteristic symptoms of super male syndrome do not have to be present in all men suffering from this disease.

They may appear after the age of 50, due to the low testosterone level (sometimes the disease is asymptomatic up to adulthood). Only in some cases can it be diagnosed with hypogonadism (testicular dysfunction), small testicles and penis, and low testosterone levels.

Children of men suffering from super male syndrome are he althy becausethe disease is not hereditary. Scientists agree that the incidence of XYY syndrome is not influenced by genetic factors, because the chromosomal aberration that causes the disease is random and occurs at different times during sperm formation.

In the 1960s, after studies on prisoners, some scientists concluded that an extra Y chromosome was responsible for aggressive behavior. However, recent studies show that this is not the norm, and this type of behavior can only be found in about 1% of patients with XYY syndrome.

Super male syndrome - diagnostics

In diagnostics, two basic tests are performed:

1. SHBG, i.e. the measurement of the concentration of sex hormone binding protein in the blood serum. They are made to assess the levels of testosterone and other androgens.

2. A cytogenetic test to analyze the chromosomes.

XYY Super Male Syndrome - treatment

It is impossible to cure a genetic disease. Only symptomatic treatment is applied, which consists in reducing the nuisance of symptoms. This treatment is the more effective the sooner the final diagnosis is made.

  • testosterone replacement therapyconsists in supplementing testosterone deficiencies. Hormone therapy can help teen boys get through puberty as well as older men who have low sex drive. In addition, balancing testosterone levels can contribute to the improvement of the condition of weak bones and weak muscles. Testosterone replacement therapy does not improve fertility.
  • infertility treatment- men with super male syndrome may have a low sperm count, and thus - problems with conceiving a child. In this case, single sperm intracytoplasmic injection (ICSI) may be used. However, it is very expensive (around $ 15,000).
