Lactic acid (Acidum lacticum) is an organic compound with a wide range of properties, depending on the concentration and pharmaceutical form used. It is used primarily in cosmetics, but not only. How does lactic acid work?
Lactic acid effect
Speaking of lactic acid, it is impossible not to mention Lactobacillus bacteria, commonly known as lactobacilli. This specific name comes from their biochemical abilities.
They can ferment carbohydrates with the production of lactic acid, which has an acidifying effect. In this way, Lactobacillus bacteria determine the correct vaginal microflora.
In cosmetology, the gentle exfoliating effect of lactic acid, reducing discoloration, moisturizing (lactic acid is a component of NMF, i.e. a natural moisturizing factor) and antibacterial properties.
In high concentrations, lactic acid has a keratolytic effect (it has the ability to soften the horny layer of the skin).
Indications for the use of lactic acid
Lactic acid is used on:
- acne,
- blackheads,
- prints,
- corns.
Lactic acid gynecological medical devices are used as an aid in the treatment of vaginitis.
Contraindications to the use of lactic acid
Hypersensitivity to lactic acid, irritations.
Available preparations
Lactic acid is found in:
- various care cosmetics (tonics, peelings, creams),
- intimate hygiene fluid, vaginal globules,
- lotions and ointments for corns (often combined with salicylic acid to remove calluses and thickening of the skin on the feet).
Dosage of lactic acid
The preparation should be used in accordance with the attached leaflet. Remember that lactic acid is corrosive in high concentrations. When using preparations for blisters, you should protect he althy skin and eyes.
Side effects of lactic acid
Depending on the form used, irritation may occur in the form of erythema, peeling and erosions.
Interaction with other drugs andsubstances
There are no known interactions of this type.
Effects on ability to drive and use machines
Lactic acid has no influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
There is no data on the distribution of topical lactic acid in humans.
Storage
Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
