Esophageal achalasia, also known as cardiac spasm or esophageal dilatation, is a disease caused by impairment of the relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter. This makes it difficult to swallow food - initially solid, sometimes also liquid. Achalasia occurs in people aged 30-60 of both sexes.

The most common symptoms ofesophageal achalasiainclude: difficulty swallowing, a burning sensation or an unpleasant aftertaste resulting from the regurgitation of food into the mouth, pain in the chest, heartburn, coughing and choking. The disease may be accompanied by distress and pain behind the breastbone. A characteristic feature is vomiting, the so-calledvomitingpurported, not preceded by nausea.

Esophageal Achalasia - Detection

Most often, the doctor makes the diagnosis on the basis of X-ray examination (X-ray) of the esophagus with the administration of a contrast agent. X-rays sometimes test acetylcholine, after which the esophageal dilatation is reduced. Occasionally, endoscopic examination of the esophagus and esophageal manometry (assessment of the tension of the sphincter of this organ) are also performed.

Esophageal Achalasia - Treatment

In the case of people suffering from esophageal achalasia, it is recommended to use a chopped or mushy diet, avoid stress and sleep in a semi-sitting position (this prevents choking). If the disease is in its early stages, your doctor may prescribe you to take diastolic and sedative medications. Sometimes endoscopic treatment or surgical widening of the key is necessary. In the latter case, the Heller's operation is performed, which consists in cutting a longitudinal strand of the circular muscle layer in the area of the key.

Is it still achalasia or already cancer?

Achalasia is associated with an increased risk of developing esophageal cancer, hence the need for endoscopic follow-up. Problems with swallowing and food retention promote inflammation in the esophagus and the discharge of food into the respiratory system, which puts in place a risk of pneumonia.

Where to go for help

Drug treatment is ineffective. Sometimes doctors recommend taking calcium channel blockers to reduce the tone of the lower sphincter. Sometimes treatments helpacupuncture, which have a relaxing effect.
