Heartburn can cause insomnia. As much as 60 percent People complaining of smoking in their esophagus wakes up in the middle of the night. To minimize your risk of heartburn, change your diet.
Heartburncan wake you up several times a night, worsening your well-being, affecting the quality of life and the condition of the entire body. - This is a burning sensation behind the breastbone that starts in the upper abdomen and spreads down the chest to the neck. This causes acid reflux into the esophagus and irritates the esophagus. When you lie down, it is difficult to swallow and your symptoms get worse. The patient is awakened by a strong cough and a feeling of choking - explains prof. Krzysztof Celiński, gastroenterologist, expert of the "Zentiva - we change habits" program.
Tiring insomnia
Troubles withsleepingcan lead to problems at work and in personal life. A person who does not sleep the next day feels weak, discouraged, drowsy, unable to focus on the work at hand, is irritable. There are also he alth complications. People suffering frominsomniaexperience more headaches, increased secretion of stress hormones, which have a weakened immune system, an increased risk of infection, and in extreme cases it may even lead to congestion and heart attack .
If the lack of sleep is caused by heartburn, the cause of the disease must first of all be determined in order to be able to choose the appropriate method of treatment. Dyspeptic symptoms may appear sporadically or appear regularly (e.g. once a week) for a long time.
Ways to get a good night's sleep
Fighting heartburn - changing your lifestyle
Occasional heartburn is a condition caused by an unhe althy lifestyle or bad habits. Changing a few habits is the fastest way to get rid of the burning problem during the day and night. The following tips will be helpful in this:
- Do not abuse alcohol and do not smoke.
- Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, but not before going to bed. Getting to the toilet at night may prevent you from falling asleep again.
- If you are waking up at night to coughing and choking, place an extra pillow under your head. A half-sitting position will help prevent heartburn symptoms at night.
- Learn to always get up at the same timetime. This way you will get your body used to a rhythm that will help you avoid waking up too early.
- Only go to bed when you want to sleep, not to rest.
- Try to control your stress. Do not contemplate the hardships of the day before going to bed.
- Physical activity will relieve everyday tension and stress. Exercise during the day, but not just before going to bed.
- Eat properly and regularly. Eat more often, but in smaller amounts. Remember not to overeat before going to bed. Eat your last large meal 3 hours before going to bed.
- You will not fall asleep if you are hungry. If you are hungry, have a light snack such as vegetables before going to bed.
Do not underestimate the symptoms - go to the doctor
If heartburn occurs more than once a week, it may be a symptom of a more serious condition of the upper digestive tract, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease. Careful observation of your body will allow you to see if smoking behind the breastbone is actually heartburn.
- Does the burning intensify when lying down (e.g. at night), bending over or after a meal?
- Does it get weaker after swallowing saliva or drinking fluids?
- Does it get weaker or better with over-the-counter medications?
An affirmative answer to the above questions is a signal that a specialist should be consulted. By treating the underlying causes of heartburn, you can eliminate the problem of waking up at night, prevent complications, and improve your quality of life.
