Pre-induction of labor is pharmacological or mechanical measures aimed at accelerating the maturation of the cervix. Pre-induction significantly facilitates the safe induction of labor. What are the methods of pre-induction of labor?

Pre-induction of labor-acceleration of cervical maturationsignificantly influenced the safety of induced labor. Thanks to it, you can avoid serious complications resulting from the immaturity of the cervix: problems with the child getting through the birth canal, uterine contractions in the absence of cervical dilation or uterine rupture.

Pre-induction of labor: prostaglandins

The administration of prostaglandins is the primary way to prepare the cervix for labor induction. Prostaglandins cause the vaginal part to open up. Thanks to them, the cervix becomes soft and supple, and the compact structure of the mucus plug is broken, which protects the fetus from penetrating external threats during pregnancy. Prostaglandins also induce uterine contractions - thanks to this, they can lead to the development of regular contractions, often ending in labor. Then pre-induction becomes true induction. The strongest contractions, and at the same time weaker effects of cervical maturation, result in intravenous administration of prostaglandins. It matures most quickly thanks to the administration of the drug (eg in the form of a gel) vaginally. The choice of the method of administering prosglandins therefore depends on the obstetrician and the primary purpose of their application. When the cervix is moderately mature, but at the same time sufficiently to permit delivery, intravenous infusions are used. When contractions are definitely too early, a gel is recommended.

Pre-induction of labor: Foley catheter

Foley catheter can be used to pre-induce labor, provided that the cervical canal is already open at least to the thickness of the catheter (preferably about 1 cm.) The balloon filled with physiological saline allows you to mechanically open the cervix, at the same time encouraging the body to release natural prostaglandins. The method is cheap, convenient and safe. However, it cannot be used in the case of an advanced or low-seated placenta, cervical bleeding, early drainage of amniotic fluid, inflammation of the vagina.
The Foley catheter is a type of tube ending in a balloon. It is traditionally used by urologists to clear the bladder.
