Miscarriage, i.e. the loss of pregnancy before the 22nd week of its duration, causes a shock. This is how 10-15 percent ends. pregnancies confirmed by a gynecologist - says Tomasz Niemiec, MD, head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic of the Institute of Mother and Child in Warsaw. - Miscarriages, however, happen more often when the woman is not yet aware that she is pregnant. Therefore, it is believed that almost half of all pregnancies are lost this way.
Causesmiscarriagemay lie on the side of the mother and the fetus. The fetusmay have had, for example, a serious genetic defect, which leads to the loss of about half a few weeks of pregnancies. - A damaged fetus is also miscarried, e.g. by the toxic effects of drugs, chemicals, alcohol, drugs - adds Dr. Renata Jaczyńska, gynecologist at the Institute of Physical Chemistry in Warsaw. - You should also remember about the possibility of the fetal egg improperly implanting in the uterus.

Miscarriages: Causes
A woman may not know that she has an abnormal structure of the uterus. The causes of miscarriages are also uterine fibroids and polyps, as well as adhesions inside this organ related to e.g. too vigorous curettage. - Often the loss of a dozen or so weekspregnancyis caused by cervical insufficiency - says Dr. Jaczyńska. - This means that the neck opens and shortens too early. We encounter this problem in women who have undergone procedures on the cervix, e.g. conization (tissue excision) or cervical dilation, which are preparation for the curettage of the uterine cavity.
It is worth knowing that each delivery can lead to cervical damage. . The more often a woman gave birth, the greater the danger. The condition of the cervix can be assessed by ultrasound. Some women require a prophylactic circular suture around the cervix. It is also advisable to lie down and avoid sexual intercourse.
Hormones play a huge role in maintaining pregnancy. The greatest threat to early pregnancy is corpus luteum failure. Over time, around 7-9 weeks, the placenta begins to take over the main life support function of the fetus. Then the importance of the corpus luteum decreases and the threat is gone. Thyroid hormones are extremely important. If it does not work properly, pregnancy may be lost.
- Most women who have had a miscarriage receive hormonal support during subsequent pregnancies - explains Dr. Jaczyńska. - The level of hormones in the blood is measured and the treatment is matched to the results.
- If there is a miscarriage, you should look at the woman's he alth - says Dr. Germany. - Diabetes, diseases of the liver, kidneys and infectious diseases such as influenza, measles, rubella, toxoplasmosis, may have a negative effect on the course of pregnancy. If a woman has a chronic medical condition, it is important that her condition is stabilized before she becomes pregnant.
The baby's father may also be "guilty" of a miscarriage - if, for example, he or she is a carrier of a genetic defect, which does not show up in him, but harms the next generation. The age of the future father (over 55) also increases the risk of developing fetal defects. In such cases, it is worth doing prenatal tests. - We don't talk about it much, but a psychological trauma can also cause a miscarriage - adds Dr. Germany.
Pregnancy after miscarriage
- After the first miscarriage, you need to undergo a gynecological examination, cytology and ultrasound. reproductive organ in terms of possible anatomical defects - says Dr. Niemiec. - It is worth performing basic blood and urine analyzes, checking the level of antibodies against cytomegalovirus, rubella and anti-toxoplasmosis.
In the case of habitual (three consecutive) miscarriages detailed diagnostics is carried out. Performs include hysteroscopy (viewing the inside of the uterus under magnification through a special speculum) and examining the level of antiphospholipid antibodies (their presence indicates problems with the implantation of the egg). A geneticist should also be consulted. The enormous stress associated with miscarriage in many women causes a significant deterioration in well-being, including depression. If the mental suffering becomes unbearable, it is worth consulting a psychologist. After the loss of pregnancy, there is a huge void that most women want to fill by getting pregnant as soon as possible. But they shouldn't rush. - Before getting pregnant again it is worth waiting for at least 3-6 months - says Dr. German. - This is the time it takes for the lining of the womb to recover and my ovaries to function again.
What is the risk of losing another pregnancy? - he asksevery woman who has had a miscarriage. Unfortunately, it increases by 25 percent. in relation to the first pregnancy. If there have been several miscarriages, the risk is even greater.
