Chronic sinusitis is associated with endoscopic treatment - sinus puncture is effective only in acute sinusitis. However, you must always follow the doctor's instructions. It is also worth reaching for home remedies for unblocking the sinuses. Check out how chronic sinusitis is being treated.

Treatmentof chronic sinusitishas changed significantly in recent years. In the past, to remove purulent discharge, puncture, i.e. sinus irrigation, was often performed. Sometimes classic surgical operations were also performed to remove the diseased mucosa. Today, endoscopic methods are leading the way, which restore the proper functions of the sinuses.

Clogged bays? Punctuation is not necessary at all!

Puncture is reserved for acute sinusitis with severe symptoms. This treatment brings relief quickly, and the antibiotic administered directly into the sinuses works faster than the oral one. However, for chronic inflammation, it is of little use. It does not improve sinus ventilation, so it does not eliminate an important cause of the disease.

What does an opening of the sinuses look like?

Balonoplasty is used to open the sinuses. Using an endoscope equipped with a camera and tools, a small reservoir is inserted into the narrow mouths of the sinuses, which when inflated with air permanently widens the mouth of the sinus. The procedure is not invasive, it can also be performed in young children and the elderly. If, as a result of subsequent inflammations, a bacterial biofilm (a layer of microbial sediment) has formed on the sinus mucosa, it can be rinsed out with a fluid introduced under high pressure with the addition of e.g. antibiotics, steroids or mucolytic drugs (thinning secretions). The endoscopic method also removes abnormalities in the structure of the sinuses, which are one of the most common causes of recurrent inflammation. Clean and unblocked sinuses regenerate quickly and start to perform their functions well.

Fighting a troublesome runny nose

  • take anti-inflammatory and anti-swelling medications for colds available in pharmacies
  • clean your nose regularly and thoroughly
  • reach for nasal preparations in drops that thin the mucus and reduce swelling of the mucosa, thanks to which they unblock the sinus openings
  • do not use the drops for more than a few days; you can use sea water in a spray without restrictions - it thins the secretion, restores the cleansing function of the cilia
  • support the treatment with vitamin C preparations and routine, sealing the walls of blood vessels, reducing the possibility of plasma fluids getting into the nasal cavities, which reduces runny nose
  • moisturize the air in rooms - dry mucous membranes are poorly defended against germs

Where are the bays located?

The bays are the extension of the nose connected with narrow tubules called estu-ductal complexes. The sinuses are located symmetrically on both sides of the nose: frontal, maxillary and ethmoid sinuses. The sphenoid sinuses behind the nose are not visible in the photo.

Why is it worth healing your sinuses?

Unblocking the sinuses is like opening a window in a stuffy room. It definitely improves your well-being, because the long runny nose ends for months. Headaches, constant grunting and coughing pass. The air inhaled is better moisturized, warmed and cleansed, which has a positive effect on the he alth of the throat and bronchi. The voice becomes sonorous, loses nasal reverberation, and the sense of smell and taste sharpen.

Important

New scientific reports show that very often problems related to the sinuses are a symptom of diseases beyond the ENT. The mucosa lining the sinuses is similar in structure to the mucosa of the small intestine and therefore reacts in the same way to malabsorption, various types of atopia and allergies. It happens that the treatment of chronic sinusitis is slow, and it turns out that treating diseases of the small intestine or choosing the right diet for people with latent celiac disease or gluten intolerance after a few weeks will relieve unpleasant sinus ailments.

Sick sinuses - minimally invasive treatment

The methods of minimally invasive treatment nowadays are practically always endoscopic, i.e. through the nostrils. These are quick and effective methods. What specific techniques can be used to open the sinuses? What is the most effective method for treating sick sinuses? These questions are answered by our otolaryngologist, Michał Michalik, expert from the MML Medical Center.
