Treatment abroad - in Europe

If you are going to any of the European Union member states, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland, you must obtain aEuropean He alth Insurance Card. You will receive it after applying for a Cards (in person, by letter or by fax) at the provincial branch of the National He alth Fund, in your place of residence.

  • People insured with the National He alth Fund have the right to receive the European He alth Insurance Card. Each insured person receives his own Card. So when you go on vacation with a family of four, everyone, including children, should get an EHIC.
  • The European He alth Insurance Card is not available to people who, for example, have started work in another countryor whose NFZ insurance has expired.
  • EHIC is not a proof of insurance in the National He alth Fund entitling you to he alth services in the territory of Poland. This means that if you are insured with the NFZ, you can only use the EHIC in other Member States.
  • Present your European He alth Insurance Card directly at the he alth facility (doctor or hospital administration). In some countries, an additional identification is required (passport is preferred).
  • If you need information while abroad, you can ask your nearest he alth insurance institution. The names and addresses as well as the he alth benefits you are en titled to can be found on the website of the National He alth Fund
  • If you need kidney dialysis or oxygen while traveling, you must agree these services with the he althcare facility where you are going to be staying.
  • The European He alth Insurance Card does not cover the costs of medical transport to Poland by the National He alth Fund and fees for he alth services, applicable in most countries. To avoid these costs being charged, it is advisable to take out additional private insurance. You must also take out private insurance if you are going to countries other than the EEA and Switzerland.
  • EU regulations also apply in the French territories: Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion, St Pierre-et-Miquelon and French Guiana; Portuguese: in the Azores and Madeira; Spanish: Majorca and the Canary Islands.
  • Community law does not apply in: Denmark - Greenland and the Faroe Islands and Great Britain - Channel Islands: Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Herm, Sark and the Isle of Man.

Reimbursement of medical expenses abroad

If you have incurred medical expenses in one of the EEA countries or Switzerland, you can apply for a refund, regardless of whether or not you had your EHIC card with you while you were abroad. Remember, however, that in most countries, the insured cover part of the costs of treatment from their own resources and these are fees that are not reimbursed by the National He alth Fund.
To obtain reimbursement, submit an appropriate application to the provincial branch of the Fund, competent for your place of residence or application for he alth insurance. The branch will check whether you were insured with the National He alth Fund or were en titled to he alth services at the time of granting the benefits and whether you attached the required documents to the application.
Documents to be attached to the application vary depending onthe country where you have been treated.
Send all bills with the application. In the absence of one of the required documents, you must take into account the refusal of reimbursement for the benefit.
