The waiting time for cataract surgery in Poland is over 12 months. For as little as PLN 500, every Polish patient can skip this line, in which several hundred thousand people are waiting. All you need is some time to arrange your treatment, money for the procedure and patience, and a willingness to go abroad for a short time.
Why Poles decide tocataract removal in the Czech Republic and Germany ? First, the price is decisive.Cataract surgeryin the Czech Republic costs around PLN 2,500. The reimbursement from the National He alth Fund is approximately PLN 2,200. This means that the total cost, including travel and accommodation, may be PLN 500. Operations in Germany are equally popular. The clinics there are more expensive, but you can find offers not exceeding PLN 3,000. This means that also in the case of treatment in Germany, the reimbursement from the National He alth Fund will cover the vast majority of expenses.
Cataract surgery abroad - how does it work?
Last year, the so-called cross-border directive was implemented into our law. It enables Polish patients to receive reimbursement of expenses for treatment abroad. The patient has to pay for the procedure himself, but then the National He alth Fund will reimburse us up to 100 percent of the expenses. Cataract surgery is an excellent example of how the new regulations work. A comprehensive guide for a patient and information on other types of treatment can be found at http: //leczsiezagranica.pl.
How to arrange cataract treatment abroad?
Cataract extraction is usually done in one day surgery. Such a procedure does not require the patient to stay in the hospital until the next day. This means that patients interested in this treatment are subject to a simpler procedure, as they do not have to obtain the consent of the National He alth Fund for the treatment.
Everything you need to do comes down to 3 steps: 1. Getting a referral for cataract surgery. It can come from both a Polish and a foreign doctor. 2. Finding a foreign clinic that will operate us within a reasonable time and price. We can choose both public and private clinics. It is imperative to confirm that the operation is performed without staying in the hospital until the next day. (Otherwise, the consent of the National He alth Fund would be necessary, which would significantly extend the entire procedure.) As for the price, remember that the National He alth Fund will reimburse only as much as it pays Polish clinics for this treatment - inin the case of an uncomplicated cataract removal procedure with simultaneous implantation of a lens, the maximum return is PLN 2,200. Anything over this amount cannot be refunded. 3. Completion of documents and submission, on the official form, of an application for reimbursement of expenses for treatment abroad by the National He alth Fund. Then it remains to wait for the return to be received. In the best situation for the patient, the return can be expected after about 2 months. If the matter becomes complicated and the National He alth Fund will have to obtain information from foreign institutions or institutions, we can wait up to 7 months for the refund.
