When am I en titled to parental allowance for a sick child?

Child care allowance is granted when the need for personal care of the mother or father falls during the child's stay in hospital, and the need has been confirmed by a medical certificate. The decision about the necessity to care for a child is always made by the doctor treating the child, who takes into account his or her he alth condition when justifying the decision on temporary incapacity for work of one of the parents.

Who can get childcare allowance?

Nursing allowance is granted when a sick child is under 14 years of age. Older children are considered family members and are no longer en titled to this type of care. It should be noted that the length of the benefit period in the case of sick children does not depend on the type of disease or the children's disability. The purpose of the care allowance is not to create special opportunities for caring for disabled children, and the sickness insurance contribution from which the care allowance is financed has not been differentiated in any way and is paid in the same amount by all insured persons, hence the scope of insurance coverage guaranteed to individual persons should not be different.

Only one parent can receive the benefit at the same time

The right to care allowance in connection with the need to care for a child is granted to the child's mother and father equally, provided that both are covered by sickness insurance, but the allowance is paid only to one of them who applies in this regard. However, the carer's allowance cannot be granted to both parents at the same time, as granting it to one excludes the right of the other.

The care allowance for the parent of a child staying in hospital is granted for the period of leave from work due to the need to provide personal care, but not longer thanfor 60 days in a calendar year or until another family member can take care of the child.
