Pearls, also known as angels' tears, are the only gemstones of organic origin. They have been among the most valuable jewels in the world for centuries, and also play a significant role in esoterics and alternative medicine. Pearls are credited with both magical properties and healing powers.
Pearlsare produced by living organisms (pearls), most often by clams and oysters, both in s alt and fresh water, and sometimes also by certain species of snails. The waters of the Persian Gulf are considered their homeland, although now they can also be found in other, distant seas and oceans.
In antiquity, it was believed that the first pearls were created at the birth of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty and fertility, who was born from the sea foam off the coast of Cyprus - when in a shell it went to the shore, drops flowing from her hair turned into pearls . Other beliefs, in turn, claim that the clams in which these precious gems were found were fertilized shortly after the storm by a rainbow touching the ocean.
How are pearls made?
The truth, however, is much more prosaic: a pearl is a way of protecting the delicate body of a mussel from a foreign body that has accidentally entered the shell: the mollusk produces a shell around it made of the same substance from which the shell's lining is made - its main ingredients are aragonite (a form of calcium carbonate) and conchiolin, a protein substance.
The size of the pearls depends on the species of pearl - most often the diameter of the pearls is a little over a centimeter, although pearl hunters can find much larger specimens.
Pearls are not always white - there are also:
- white and pink pearls
- cream pearls
- pink pearls
- gray pearls
- yellow pearls
- dark gray pearls
- black pearls
- pearls with or without rainbow shine
Depending on the temperature of the water in which they were made, they have a different gloss: those from warm waters are matte, while those from cold waters are shiny.
A pearl for a virgin and against bad emotions
According to the mystical symbolism, the pearl symbolizes the best in people:
- wisdom
- cleanliness
- innocence
- honesty
That is why it has been a symbol of young people for agesgirls and women before marriage.
It was also recommended to young women for the healing properties attributed to it: it was believed that a pearl worn around the neck or by the heart, or even better their whole necklace, stimulates femininity, supports fertility and facilitates pregnancy for those women who have a problem with it, and also protects against "evil gaze", charm and curse.
Pearls were also recommended for pregnant women - it was believed that when worn by a future mother right next to her belly, they help her avoid negative emotions, cleanse the body of toxins and give birth to a he althy baby.
Pearl powder mixed with goat milk was prescribed by the healers to men who wanted to father a son - he was supposed to help in this if a potential future father drank it at midnight on the night of the spring solstice.
Pearls instead of a psychiatrist
For centuries, the pearl was also considered a remedy for ailments and ailments related to the psyche.
It was believed that the pearl sewn into clothes helped many people find their destiny, feel good in their own skin - it gave the timid self-confidence, lost and sad - strength for further life.
Pearl powder was also treated as a cure for madness and other mental illnesses: it was believed that when taken orally, it clears the mind of bad tendencies, negative thoughts and intentions, and pearl dissolved in lemon juice helps reduce bouts of madness and the intensity of mental disorders .

Also, supporters of modern unconventional medicine believe that pearls can help in the fight against diseases, as thanks to them the body begins to function according to the rhythm of changes occurring in nature, in which what passes, after some time begins to regenerate, often stronger than before.

Pearls in the fight against cancer
The healing properties of pearls are so popular now that various research institutions deal with them seriously.
Experiments conducted by Pearl Aquaculture Research Foundation in the Indian city of Port Blair on pearls produced there using a special technique have shown that pearls contain small amounts of minerals necessary for the life and functioning of the body, including zinc, calcium, magnesium , iron, sodium and potassium.
The Indian scientist who conducted the research - Ajai Kumar Sonkar - on the basis of the obtained results suggested that perhaps the zinc contained in the pearls is able to prevent the growth of cancer cells (the results of his research were also published by the British Journal of Cancer).
Other studies conducted at the same institute have shown that, thanks to the zinc contained in pearls, they can also have a good effect on wound healing, as well as the proper functioning of sex hormones and insulin, and due to the presence of other substances, they can also be useful in the treatment of skin problems or help with problems with appetite.
To confirm - or disprove - scientifically the healing properties of pearls, an Indian scientist intends to conduct a clinical trial shortly.
