Our body is an extraordinary structure that, even when we are sick, carries a memory of proper functioning. With the help of craniosacral therapy, we can summon it and wake up dormant self-healing mechanisms.

It starts as usual: I am lying on a comfortable couch, fully dressed. I try to relax, but it doesn't work well at first. Thousands of thoughts run through your head. Recently, I have been living in tension, I have been sleeping badly, and my throat has been scratching for several days. Stress and exhaustion make themselves felt.
- I'll cover you with a blanket - Basia Budyn's warm voice soothes.
I relax. The therapist slides one hand under my buttocks and the other on my stomach. She is focused and calm, as if in a meditative state.

Craniosacral therapy: gentle touch

I close my eyes and wonder what exactlycraniosacral therapy isand what should I be feeling? For now, all I can feel is icy cold in the tailbone area. As if I had a lump of ice at the base of thespine . After a few minutes, the therapist's hands move higher. And so, as they wander slowly along my body, they reach my head. The hands are warm, the touch is gentle. I can feel the stress of the whole day disappearing somewhere. If only I could, I would fall into a he althy, refreshing sleep. Unfortunately, the procedure is coming to an end. Just one last touch - lower back again. Now, however, I feel hot in this place. The ice cube dissolved.
- The base of the spine was blocked - said the therapist before I could even mention my impressions. What does this mean and what are the consequences for my he alth?

How does craniosacral therapy work?

Craniosacral therapy is a holistic therapeutic system developed at the beginning of the 20th century by American doctors. It assumes that under the influence of various factors - trauma, stress, traumatic experiences - energy cysts are formed in the body that block its proper functioning.
- One of my colleaguestherapistscompared them to the clips securing the tablecloth - says Basia. - The operation of traditional medicine is like straightening the folds created in this way on the tablecloth, without removing the clip. Craniosacral Therapy, on the other hand, tries to remove the clip, the root causediseases. How?
- By restoring natural movement in the body - answers the therapist. - The human body is a system where everything is connected to everything, and the axis of this system is the craniosacral system. The fluid that flows around the brain pulses in a specific way, causing the brain to move on to the bones. These are minimal vibrations on the seams of the skull, which through the dura mater further cause the movement of the sacrum.
- A person is he althy when the whole system is open and when the bones move properly when the fluid is pulsating - explains Basia.
This principle was discovered in the 1920s by the American physician William Sutherland. He questioned the current view on the immobility of the skull and developed a model of the system of mutual tensions and the principles of their transmission in the skull - dura mater - sacrum.

Elżbieta Wolska , doctor of medical sciences
Doctors keep a great distance to craniosacral therapy, as indeed to most natural treatments. And the Polish medical community is exceptionally conservative in this respect. In Poland, even homeopathy is considered ineffective, while, for example, German doctors have been using it for a long time. I have 40 years of medical practice behind me and I am more and more inclined towards natural methods. If something works, why not use it, even if we don't quite understand it? In the world, people talk more and more about the need to approach people holistically. I am happy to observe that this awareness is slowly reaching our medical community as well. When it comes to craniosacral therapy, I saw its effects: improving the general condition and vitality of an elderly, chronically ill patient. Therefore, I support this method. Of course, when it is necessary to save a life, the same laying on of hands is not enough, but it can certainly greatly assist traditional treatment.
Monika Główczak,Psychologist
I am careful about people working with the body and I would never recommend a therapist to my patient whom I would not trust. I first found out about the effectiveness of craniosacral therapy on myself. For many years I suffered from backache and neck pain, often leading to migraine attacks. After a series of injections, low back pain has subsided, and headaches are much less common. Currently, I use treatments when necessary, in situations of increased effort and stress. I also recommend this type of therapy to my patients. As a psychotherapist, I realize that various experiences, often very traumatic, are encoded in the body. Craniosacral therapy releases andremoves these blockages. It is much easier to work with the patient after various things. People become more open, calmer, stand more confidently on their feet. As if they had more dignity in them.

Craniosacral therapy: regulating pulsation

The rhythm of the ripple of the cerebrospinal fluid as the bones move by Dr. Sutherland called the breath of life. He described it as the third physiological rhythm - the first is pulmonary breathing, the second is the heartbeat. Disruption of this rhythm may cause abnormalities in the work of the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. In turn, restoring the proper pulsation restores the body's balance.
- He alth is saved in the body - provides Basia Budyn. - It's just that under the influence of harmful factors and the pace of life, the body forgets about it. The role of the therapist is to remind the system that it can heal itself.
Craniosacral therapy is based on the belief that the human body has shape memory and knows the mechanisms that restore the state of equilibrium. It is like a piece of paper, kneaded with everyday problems, which can be straightened at any time. This is the therapist's job. With a very light touch, he observes tensions and blockages not only in the skull and spine, but indirectly throughout the body. At the same time, it balances these tensions through touch.
- It's working with the body, extended to something that eludes rational interpretation - explains Basia Budyn. - You have to be very open to the patient to pick up his problems. I sense it in different ways, such as temperature, pulsation, flow, vibration.

Craniosacral Therapy: Patient Knowledge and Respect

This requires not only detailed knowledge of human anatomy, but also intuition and great respect for the patient.
Basia Budyn has been working with patients for five years. She graduated from the Medical Vocational College of Physiotherapy in Warsaw (Faculty of Naturotherapy). He has completed numerous courses and a year of psychological studies. He uses manual therapy (massage similar to shiatsu), polarity and the craniosacral method in which he specializes.
- It is not only my job, but also a way of life - he confesses. - I am an example that this therapy helps, because before I started using it in others, I gave it up myself.

Craniosacral Therapy: Emotions Unlock

Often the cause of the disease is some kind of traumatic experience. Craniosacral therapy not only helps to remove its effects, but also comes to the experience itself. Various things happen then. Sometimes the patient starts crying, trembling, makes sudden movements.
- It's natural, because emotions are released - Basia explains. -People are opening up. When we recover from disease, not only our body changes, but also our outlook on the world. It begins with the elimination of pain or other ailments. But there is something else behind it. Old resentments, forgotten grievances are heard. The patient becomes aware of different things and if he is ready for a change - he really does change! I only help him in this.
Grażyna Ciesielska has been a patient of Basia Budyn for several years. "She recently got me out of severe bronchitis," she says. - In general, since I use this therapy, I feel better, I get sick less often. The nagging pain of his injured knee also subsided.

Craniosacral therapy: joy of life returns

What's the secret? What is the benefit of using craniosacral therapy?
- It makes the body come to life. 80 percent the effectiveness of this method is the work of the patient himself - says Basia Budyn. The point is that people want to take responsibility for their own lives. If he realizes that he has an impact on what is happening to him, including his he alth, then suddenly everything turns out to be simple. Self-esteem returns, approaches difficult situations with greater distance and resolves them more easily. Suddenly, he begins to accept his body and the world around him. As a consequence, satisfaction and joy in life return.
Maybe it all sounds a bit mysterious and unbelievable, but it really works … I checked: the cold is over. Not too tired, because it probably takes more time, but for several days I have been in a good mood!
