Obesity is known to be one of the risk factors for developing asthma. Scientific research presented by Dr. Subhabrata Moitra from the Institut de Salut Global in Barcelona (Spain) shows that there is also an inverse relationship between the two diseases - asthma can lead to obesity.
The latest Spanish research on the relationship between asthma and obesity was presented at the International Congress of the European Respiratory Society in September 2022. in Paris.
The survey covered 8,618 people from 11 European Union countries and Australia. At the initial stage of the study, none of the participants were obese, but had asthma, took asthma medications, and had an asthma attack in the last 12 months. The he alth of the participants was examined first after 10 and then after 20 years. The analysis took into account the age, sex and physical activity of the respondents.
Research has shown that after 10 years obesity was diagnosed in approx. 10% of respondents, and after another decade in another 8 percent. subjects. The association between asthma and obesity risk was greater in those who developed asthma in adulthood and in those who did not have allergic asthma.
Obesity as a risk factor for asthma has long been recognized. It causes many physiological, metabolic and inflammatory changes that "promote" asthma. However, a Spanish study shows that an inverse relationship is possible. It is not clear, however, whether the very presence of asthma is associated with a higher risk of obesity, or whether asthma treatments affect this relationship.
