Ultrasound is routinely performed at least 3 times during pregnancy. The first ultrasound in the 10th week of pregnancy, although it is not officially included in the standard of perinatal care, is recommended by the Ultrasound Section of the PTG. Thanks to it, you can be sure that you are pregnant and that it is positioned correctly.

Pregnant ultrasoundshould be done at least three times. The scope of each of them is different. In addition, additional tests are carried out, depending on the obstetric situation of the woman, but also on the practice adopted by the doctor in charge of the pregnancy. At present, there are no studies whose results would suggest that ultrasound adversely affects the development of the fetus.

USG before 10 weeks of pregnancy

It is not included in the standard of perinatal care, but is almost a standard in many offices, especially private ones. They are also recommended by the Ultrasound Section of the PTG. This is the first ultrasound examination performed during one of the first visits to the gynecologist after a positive pregnancy test result. It should be performed with a vaginal probe (empty the bladder first).

The examination is not reimbursed, usually it is included in the cost of a visit to a private practice doctor.

Purpose of the test : confirmation of pregnancy and its location - is it normal (intrauterine) or not. What exactly is assessed?

  • visualization and localization of the fetal egg - on this basis, an intrauterine pregnancy is established and an ectopic pregnancy is excluded
  • pregnancy vesicle - its presence (measurement), location in the uterine cavity, number of pregnancy vesicles and their shape
  • embryo - its presence, length measurement, presence of heart activity
  • number of embryos, chorion and amniotic cells
  • yolk sac - presence (yes / no),
  • description of any irregularities
  • reproductive organ - the uterus with the cervix (shape, structure, defects, fibroids, etc.), size (normal, enlarged), location and structure of the appendages.

What do the results say?The test assesses whether a pregnancy has occurred and whether it is correctly positioned (ectopic pregnancy must be terminated as it is life-threatening).
