I struggle with mental disorders such as mild anxiety states or social phobia. I would like to undergo the diagnosis with the MMPI test. I had psychotherapy some time ago, but I didn't talk to the psychologist about the diagnosis. The aim of the study, apart from information for me, would be to choose the best psychotherapist and the type of therapy. Is it safe to undergo such a test yourself, i.e. in a facility offering such a test? Can the knowledge contained in it harm me? Should I consult a psychologist first? Will I always get a result, regardless of the expert's assessment? What if the test is false? Repeat possible?
The MMPI-2 test (i.e. the newer, Polish-standard version of the MMPI test) will not lead you to choose the best psychotherapist and the type of therapy. Undergoing a psychological test in a specialist facility is never dangerous, and the knowledge resulting from the test results cannot hurt.
By submitting to the test, you obviously have the right to receive the full score. If the test is adulterated - and it is very easy to check it, because the test contains several control scales - it cannot be interpreted and nothing results from it except the information that the examined person gives answers that do not match the key. However, the psychologist can diagnose whether it is the result of simply presenting himself in a better light, or, for example, of a mental illness. Re-examination with the test is possible after a period not shorter than 6 months. In the case of phobias or anxiety states, psychotherapy seems to be more important than psychometric diagnosis.
