Bonding is a method of restoring teeth and covering the surface of discolored teeth in order to give broken or distorted crowns a nice and even appearance. This technique is called non-invasive because it requires only a minimal preparation of the tooth. Bonding uses composite resins.

The term " bonding " derives from the method of applying composite fillings in the hard tissues of teeth. It is the process of connecting a composite filling with the hard tissues of a tooth and consists of:

1. etching the enamel with a mild acid;

2. applying composite resins on etched tissues;

3. applying the correct composite.

Composite bonding: who chooses this method?

Covering the teeth with composite (composite bonding) is done in many cases. It is mainly chosen for economic reasons (such a filling is many times cheaper than any prosthetic restoration - porcelain veneers, crowns and others).

It is also performed when we do not have time (the patient has to leave tomorrow, but he wants to have nicer teeth). Sometimes the composite filling is used as a temporary filling (for longer therapy, to quickly improve the smile).

Such solutions are also used when the patient does not agree to prosthetic treatment, and the use of composite fillings will not adversely affect the patient's he alth.

Composite bonding: treatment

How is the procedure of improving the appearance of the tooth with the use of composite resin? First, the front part of the tooth is slightly reduced so that the "new" tooth is not too big. Then, microscopic grooves are etched into the tooth surface with a mild acid. Then the composite resin, the color of which is matched to the color of the surrounding teeth, is applied to the tooth, gives it the desired shape, hardens it with a special light, and finally smoothes and polishes it.

Bonding is not the same as teeth whitening

The use of the term bonding to describe bleaching (in Anglo-Saxon terminology: bleaching) I believe is wrong. Teeth whitening (such as whitening bathroom fittings, clothes) consists in regaining the natural color through the use of specific chemicals. When whitening teeth, there is no question of putting anything onthe tooth surface permanently as is done with bonding. The shape of the tooth crown does not change during whitening. Only the color of the tooth is modified. And bonding is applying a layer of a classic composite to the surfaces of the teeth - explains the drug. stom. Jacek Wieczorek from CS Eurodental.

Bonding with veneers

Veneers are thin plates fixed on the facing (labial) part of the tooth. They are used to eliminate tooth imperfections. Depending on the material from which they are made, their durability depends. Porcelain veneers (classified as prosthetic filling methods) are stronger, while composite veneers (bonding) are cheaper.

Types of veneers: composite, porcelain, acrylic and other veneers

  • Bonding: composite veneers

Composite veneers can be made in two variants:

1. As prefabricated elements, requiring slight adjustment during installation; installed on a flowable composite while maintaining all the above-described phases of fixing the composite.

2. Made "out of hand". After cleaning the teeth, etching and applying bonding resins to them, the composite is applied in layers. The doctor forms a tooth, as if sticking it out of a composite.

  • Bonding: porcelain veneers without sanding

You can also choose an indirect treatment, i.e. porcelain veneers made without grinding, which, due to the method of fixing, are classified as bonding. Such veneers are made of porcelain, on a zirconium base, they are much nicer than composite ones, they have a more stable color. Unfortunately, their durability is similar to that of composite veneers, but the price is comparable to those made of porcelain.

Bonding durability

Composite bonding is a less durable solution compared to conventional prosthetic restorations. Teeth can be damaged faster, discolor and lose their initial effect.

Inaccurate performance of the procedure can be, and unfortunately often becomes, a threat to the soft tissues that fix the tooth in the socket. Incorrect bonding is also responsible for some periodontal diseases.
