See what the NRL Dental Committee is recommending to dentists in the wake of the SARS CoV-2 coronavirus epidemic. Will they cancel planned patient visits?

On March 11, 2022, the Dental Committee of the NRL issued a communication in connection with the SARS CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic, in whichrecommends to suspend admission of patients or limit them to those strictly necessary. The dentists, of course, have the final say, but they have every right to do so.

The Dental Committee argues that this decision is caused by the public good , as 90 percent of dental procedures are carried out using tools that create a spray of water and saliva particles that remain in the even after the procedure, which means thatthe possibility of infection of the staff and subsequent patients is greater here than in clinics of other specializations.

National consultants in the field of periodontics and dental prosthetics recommended to limit the provision of services. In the absence of clear guidelines from the authorities, the Dental Committee recommends limiting the provision of services to those strictly necessary, saving life or preventing serious damage to he alth.

The Dental Committee of the NRL proposes to base the procedure on the following scheme:

  1. In the event of a decision to suspend admissions, the dental facility providestelephone contact for patients requiring urgent intervention . After the initial assessment of the problem on the basis of a telephone conversation, the doctor decides on the further course of the procedure. The doctor also has the right to issue ae-prescription , and in special cases alsosick leave for the period of waiting for an appointment(however, in accordance with the regulations, it is possible to issue a certificate about the inability to work up to two days back).
  2. If a patient's visit to the office is necessary, the patient is scheduled as soon as possible and the patient should adapt to the appointed date.
  3. Admitting the patient is preceded by the submission ofstatement(in the case of a child - by the guardian).
  4. If there are any doubts about the patient's condition: the accuracy of the statement, symptoms and historypointing to the suspicion of carrying the SARS-CoV-2 virus - a typical procedure specified by GIS is implemented.
  5. Necessary treatment should be performed withmaximum care in terms of protection against possible infection . It is recommended to use personal protective equipment, rinsing the mouth with a warm solution of antiseptic liquid containing chlorhexidine, cofferdam - if the procedure involves the formation of an aerosol of water and saliva, disinfection of equipment - including surface disinfection of handles and seats).

At the same time, NRL ensures that it will continue consultations with the National He alth Fund and strive to take into account the situation of medical facilities when designing provisions on protection and compensation, as well as to immediately provide medical personnel with tests for the presence of the virus.
