I have hepatitis C and I am on Interferon treatment. At the moment, the results are negative, i.e. the virus is dormant. I am a person who likes sports, and during the treatment I could not do it due to weakness and, most of all, I lost 15 kg. Now I would like to return to my previous weight and I want to work out in the gym. Can I take whey protein, e.g. from Łowicz for weight gain, because the liver also needs protein for regeneration? Are these types of proteins rather inadvisable, and should I use only natural ones?

First of all, you should take care of a regenerating, energy-rich, but well-balanced and easily digestible diet.

You shouldn't overload your liver with excess protein from supplements. The more that I don't know what your daily menu looks like.

Protein you should eat about 1.0-1.2 g / kg of body weight a day, if you are not underweight, and 1.5 g / kg of body weight if you are malnourished. This dose ensures the proper level of liver cell renewal. However, too much protein intake, e.g. due to taking supplements, may increase the amount of ammonia in the blood.

The most important rules are:

Avoiding alcohol in any form. Eating 5-7 meals a day, including one nightly carbohydrate. You should eat meals every 2.5-3 hours. Carbohydrates in the diet should come primarily from starchy products (bread, groats, pasta, potatoes) and from vegetables and fruit, and should constitute about 300-400g per day.

Simple carbohydrates in the form of the so-called added sugar (sugar, especially glucose-fructose syrup, also honey, fructose, jams, sweets) daily should not exceed 50 g, because the excessive amount of simple sugars increases the concentration of triglycerides in the liver and intensifies its fatty tissue.

Fats should be consumed in the amount of about 1 g / 1 kg of proper body weight, on average about 70 g.

The source of protein should be lean products - fish, poultry, meat, cold cuts, cottage cheese, milk, yoghurt, kefir, eggs.

The food should be boiled in water or steamed, stewed without adding fat, and baked with the lid on.

Products rich in dietary fiber and difficult to digest should be excluded from the diet due to the tendency of patients to flatulence and diarrhea (dark wholemeal bread and graham, groatsbuckwheat).

You shouldn't eat flatulent vegetables.

You should introduce omega-3 fatty acid supplementation in the amount of 1-2 g / day. The supplementation of vitamins B1, B6, PP, folic acid, B12, D and vitamin K is also important.
