A tumor most often appears on the head or forehead of young children who are in constant motion and fall frequently. Usually, bumps and accompanying bruises are harmless. However, if you notice, for example, dizziness or headaches in addition to the spherical swelling on the surface of the head or forehead, see a doctor. They may be a symptom of concussion. Check out the first aid in the event of a blow to the head and what symptoms to recognize by a concussion.

A bump on the headorforeheadis a spherical thickening on the surface of a bone that results from an impact. It is very often accompanied by slight swelling and bruising, which are usually not signs of a more serious injury. The head has a lot of blood supply and on impact, delicate blood vessels are damaged, so even minor injuries cause extensive subcutaneous bleeding.

Bump on the head / forehead - first aid

As soon as possible, apply gauze soaked in cold water with vinegar, ice cubes wrapped in gauze or a cooling plaster to the tumor. These types of compresses constrict blood vessels, reduce bleeding under the skin and swelling, and relieve pain. Remember that a cold compress should not be applied for more than 10 minutes. The next day, you can apply a warm and moist compress (to dilate the blood vessels), which will speed up healing. The bump and bruise should disappear within 10 days.

If the skin is additionally cut, stop the bleeding before applying a compress: apply a gauze pad and press lightly. When the blood stops flowing, disinfect the wound with a wound cleanser that will reduce the risk of infection (never with alcohol-based preparations!) And apply a plaster.

Important

Infants are particularly vulnerable to brain injury. They have a thin skull with ungrown sutures and a fontanel, therefore they are easily deformed. Concussion of the brain and the bulging of the fontanel or the detachment of the cranial sutures may occur, for example, when a child falls off the couch or changing table.
