I frostbitten my ear while skiing. Will it stay like this or can I cure it somehow?

The ears are one of the typical spots that get frostbitten. They are generally mild frostbite, and this is probably the case with you. The face, nose, feet and hands are also exposed to frostbite to a similar degree. Factors contributing to the occurrence of frostbite include smoking, chronic diseases of the blood vessels, as well as the earlier consumption of alcohol before being outside.
In mild cases of frostbite, in the initial stage, the skin becomes pale, which is caused by the contraction of the blood vessels. Sometimes tingling and burning are felt in the frostbitten area. Later pale turns into redness and in some cases also turns blue. In such cases, we are talking about the first stage of frostbite, which covers the superficial layers of the epidermis. As a result of prolonged exposure to cold, changes such as redness, swelling, blisters may appear - then we have a second degree of frostbite. Occasionally, the blisters may be discolored with blood. These changes occur as a result of damage to the superficial vessels located under the skin. These changes are usually associated with pain sensation. If there is a risk of blisters, apply a dry, sterile protective dressing to the endangered area. When frostbite affects the feet, remember to separate the fingers with sterile gauze. The third degree of frostbite involves deeper tissues. In addition to the blisters, there is also necrosis. If the necrosis is deep, it is called the fourth degree of frostbite. It is necessary to take off clothes and slowly warm the frostbitten part of the body, for example, by immersion in warm water. The procedure in each case consists mainly in ceasing exposure to cold, gently warming the frostbitten part of the body, and in the future avoiding similar exposure to cold. It is important to handle the frostbitten area gently. If, as a result of frostbite, changes or discontinuity of the skin surface occur, it is necessary to contact a doctor who will determine the method of dressing the lesion and select local treatment. In chronic management, it is important to keep the area that has been frostbitten in heat and to lubricate it properly - optimally with white petroleum jelly.
