Oncology is a branch of science and medicine dealing with cancer - its diagnosis, testing and treatment, as well as cancer prevention. Oncology is also the colloquial name of the oncology department where cancer patients are treated.

Oncologyis currently one of the fastest developing fields of medicine. This is due to its specificity. Neoplastic diseases are one of the most common causes of death: in Poland, malignant neoplasms are the second cause of death after cardiovascular diseases.

In the last few decades the number of cancer cases has increased rapidly, and terms such as cancer, neoplasm or malignant neoplasm are already commonplace in the practice of doctors of many specializations.

What does oncology do?

Oncologyas a field of science deals with all issues related to neoplastic diseases: both the formation and structure of neoplastic cells, as well as cancer diagnosis and treatment. This branch of medicine is extremely extensive, it affects even several hundred very different disease entities.

The scope of knowledge about cancer and its treatment options is also growing rapidly, which is closely related to the progress in research and the development of modern therapies.

Within oncology there is:

  • Clinical oncology- deals with the diagnosis and treatment of human neoplastic diseases
  • Experimental oncology- deals with the research of neoplastic cells in laboratory conditions - e.g. in cell cultures and in animals
  • Palliative care - dedicated to the care of terminally ill cancer patients, focused on alleviating pain and other symptoms of progressive cancer and increasing the patient's quality of life
  • Psychooncology- provides psychological help for people with cancer and their families.

Treatment of neoplastic diseases is de alt by the following specialists:

  • clinical oncologist - provides comprehensive care for a person suffering from cancer (excluding surgery)
  • oncologist surgeon - deals with the qualification of patients for surgery and the performance of operations
  • oncology radiotherapist - deals with the planning of radiotherapy, cooperating in this area, inter alia, with an electroradiologist, radiotherapy technician, medical physicist and cancer nurse.
  • oncology nurse - deals with the nursing care of an oncology patient
  • specialist in palliative medicine - deals with the care of terminally ill patients.

Oncology - what is oncological treatment?

The method of oncological treatment depends on the diagnosed neoplastic disease. Cancer patients are looked after by specialists of various professions: both oncologist and cancer nurse, dietitian, psycho-oncologist, and - depending on the type of treatment - oncological surgeon, radiotherapist or palliative medicine specialist.

In the treatment of neoplastic diseases, both surgical methods, consisting in the excision of the tissue occupied by the tumor along with the margin of he althy tissue, and non-surgical methods are used.

The methods of treating cancer are:

  • operation
  • radiotherapy - involves treatment with ionizing radiation
  • chemotherapy - involves the treatment of neoplasms with cytostatic drugs that affect the vital functions of cells
  • immunotherapy - the use of drugs that strengthen the immune response of the body, which allows the destruction of cancer cells without the need to interfere with other tissues
  • hormone therapy - this method is used to treat hormone-dependent neoplasms, and it involves changing the hormonal environment, which allows to inhibit the growth of neoplastic cells.
