Terryism (terrestrialism, chafing) is classified as paraphilia (sexual preference disorders) when it becomes the only or preferred method of fulfilling sexual needs. The term describes the achievement of sexual gratification by rubbing against the body of a stranger in crowded public places. The term terryism comes from the Frenchfrottage- rubbing.
The favorite places where terry people like to fulfill their strange needs are buses, trams, trains, places with narrow passages, but also elevators or queues in the store. Terryism is not a sexual preference disorder when it is "surrogate behavior".
Frotherism- classification of parishes
The term "paraphilia" is sometimes used interchangeably with the terms: perversion, deviation or deviation and means a disorder of sexual preference. Simply put, it concerns the impaired ability to maintain emotional-erotic relationships.
There are three categories of parish behavior:
- sexual arousal and preferences for non-personal items;
- sexual arousal and preferences for suffering and humiliation situations;
- sexual arousal and preferences for involuntary partners.2
In the "Classification of Mental and Behavioral Disorders" terrestrialism has been classified as "other sexual preference disorders" (along with necrophilia and others).3
Terry - occurrence
In our culture, terryism, in contrast to exhibitionism (public exposure), often goes unnoticed by the victims. It is also not a common phenomenon considered to be a social problem. This disorder occurs mostly in men, especially in passive and insecure men. They are most often found between the ages of 15 and 25.
Rubbing against breasts or buttocks of foreign women in placespublic can be morbid. People suffering from chafing usually do not show exhibitionist tendencies, but they provoke situations in which they can discreetly and anonymously caress and rub against a person of the opposite sex (most often the buttocks of women and their breasts). Most often it happens in crowded places, such as buses, concerts, subway, etc. The rubbing and hugging happens randomly. Occasionally it is associated with a buttock fetish. However, the use of the crowds of public transport as a carrier means that the subject of friction is simply a physically accessible part of the body.
Persons who practice chirping strive to achieve sexual gratification by stimulating their genitals. Men who suffer from chafing usually get an erection as a result of their activity. Some of them expose themselves, but hide their penis under a coat or other garment.
The frequency of terryism is not clearly defined. Sexual preference disorders, such as terribly wrong, are thought to be more common in men, but this does not mean that the disorder is exclusively male-related.
Research and clinical data show that paraphilia-type disorders often accompany other types of disorders - especially those associated with impaired control of impulsive behavior, e.g. mental diseases, disorders resulting from brain injuries, personality disorders, emotional, addiction to intoxicating substances (alcohol, drugs), etc.
Moreover, parish interests or behaviors focused on an unusual stimulus, such as crowds, may appear in relatively he althy people in situations of reduced emotional resistance, chronic stress, fatigue or intoxication with substances.
Terryism - reasons
Despite the research on the genesis of sexual preference disorders, no single coherent theory explaining these phenomena has been developed. The most common theories are based on the thesis that sexual deviations are the result of sexual development disorders. Based on this assumption, two schools - psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral - developed concepts of paraphilia formation, including chafing.
From the perspective of theories derived from classical psychoanalysis, sexual perversions are retention (fixation) or return (regression) to early childhood forms of sexuality that persist in a given person in adulthood. Early childhood sexuality in its rudimentary form is preserved in the sphere of consciousness, and the perverse act itself takes the form of a ritual, a rigid patternnecessary for orgasm. According to representatives of psychoanalytical thought, castration anxiety is of decisive importance for the development of sexual perversions. The perverse act itself would be a symbolic denial of castration. So, if chafing became the cause of the first sexual experiences in childhood, it is possible that it would persist in the adult.
More modern representatives of psychodynamic theories recognize that apart from the abovementioned drive theories, the relationships that the sick person is subject to play an important role. One of the psychodynamic theories points out that sexual perversion itself can act as an escape from a close relationship. A patient with a sense of risk of losing his identity engages in perverse activities to protect him from excessive closeness. Hence, behavior such as conducting obscene phone calls, sexual contact with animals or rubbing against people in crowded public places.
Cognitive-behavioral theories pay attention to the formation of paraphilia in the learning process. Sexual behavior is treated as a result and consequence of acquiring and consolidating habits by repeating gratifying activities. According to the representatives of the learning theory, stimuli that initially did not cause a sexual response (were indifferent) acquire sexual significance through the selection of appropriate reinforcements (positive or negative) and trigger a sexual response. Then the acquired habits are consolidated through the patient's use of masturbation behavior. In the process of shaping and acquiring habits, an important role in the growth of deviant tendencies is played by the sexual fantasies of the patient. The representatives of the social learning theory point to the importance of the first sexual experiences, emphasizing that the behaviors learned in the early stage of adolescence are permanent and are difficult to extinguish (the so-called imprinting-imprinting theory).
Terryism - treatment
The occurrence of symptoms is an indication for consultation with specialists in the treatment of sexual disorders in order to determine whether the given behaviors fall within the categories of normative behavior or require treatment. People involved in treatment are sexologists, clinical sexologists, psychiatrists and certified psychotherapists.
The basis for the diagnosis of sexual preference disorders is a detailed interview including data on the patient's development and psychosexual development. In the case of paraphilia, methods based on the measurement of the patient's sexual responses to a specific one are optionally usedtype of stimuli.
In the case of sexual deviations involving sexual arousal despite the partner's disagreement, including choking, treatment methods combining cognitive and behavioral techniques have shown promising results.
Treatment is based on getting to know the thought system, misconceptions and stereotypes, deviant sexual fantasies and the emotional attitudes underlying the action. As part of therapeutic work, among others the stages of the decision-making process leading to abuse are analyzed (the so-called deviant cycle), which is to enable the patient to intervene early and refrain from such behavior. Next, the therapeutic procedure involves the modification of the cognitive (mental) elements of the patient's functioning.
The above psychotherapeutic methods are most often supplemented with specific techniques involving the sexual behavior of the patient. During therapeutic sessions, the patient imagines a deviant sexual act - and then he is exposed to unpleasant stimuli, e.g. inhalation with a strong, unpleasant smell. Another set of exercises used in therapy is masturbation training, during which the patient, fantasizing about deviant stimuli, causes the patient to ejaculate, and then continues to masturbate, constantly expressing his own sexual fantasies. The principle of the above exercises is to obtain a reaction of aversion to imagined deviant situations - which is supposed to lead to a permanent extinction of sexual arousal to inappropriate situations and activities.
Terry - silent consent
The phenomenon of chafing has definitely increased in strength and has evolved. In the past, people noticed touching the buttocks or even obvious stroking. Today, terryism happens more often in public transport. In terrestrials, the source of sexual arousal is touching or rubbing against the body of a stranger. A necessary condition to perform these activities in public, obligatorily crowded places.
Evolution is not only the phenomenon itself, its intensity, but also the attitude of passengers. When objects of terrestrialism showed an active, more or less, opposition, this was usually enough. The most common, but also the most passive, reaction was to change the place on the bus or subway, i.e. to leave the danger zone. Another, more active, behavior was calling attention aloud combined with turning towards the "aggressor".
We often have to do with the lack of any reaction from people who are the subject of such activities. Lack of reaction - paradoxically - is a consent to continuedealings.
Terryism in Japan - a social problem
In some countries the problem is so serious that special wagons only for women have been introduced in the subway. Ladies in Tokyo and Mexico City are particularly vulnerable to "attacks" by terrestrials.
In Japan, information campaigns are conducted on the subject of terrestrialism, films are made, and the perpetrators are severely punished. Most young people in major cities (such as the Tokyo metro) have experienced terryism personally, and some transport companies have introduced female-only carriages during rush hours. A 2001 survey of two Tokyo high schools revealed that over 70% of students had fallen victim to terribly wrongdoing.
Sometimes women are also affected by this parish. Female terrestrials are referred to in Japan as chijo. Chikan is a Japanese word used to describe men who perform these kinds of actions. Crowded trains are a favorite for chikan and chijo.
As this term is not defined in Japanese law, it is used to describe acts that break several laws. While crowded trains are the most common place for this type of act, another common place for them is bicycle parking lots where victims are leaning over a bicycle lock. Chikan is also often depicted in Japanese pornography.
The worries about terryism in Japan are so great that a feature film was made on this subject ("Soredemo boku wa yattenai"). It was based on the true story of an office worker who was acquitted of terribly charges after five years of legal battles. The film addresses the issue of terryism and undermines the fairness of the legal system in Japan, which has a criminal conviction rate of 99.9%.
