A caesarean section is a serious operation, but in many cases it is a safer way for the baby and the mother to leave the womb. What will happen to you and your little one from the beginning to the end of the procedure?

  • Preparation for an electiveCaesarean sectionrequires you to refrain from eating for a minimum of 6 hours prior tosurgery . Usually, scheduled treatments are performed in the morning and you will be asked not to eat anything since a light dinner. In addition, prepare as for every childbirth - come to the hospital with things for you and your baby, and documents with a complete set of test results.

  • Before the operation, the midwife will connect you to a CTG machine, measure your pressure and temperature, shave your pubic hair and insert a cannula, i.e. a tube with a needle through which physiological fluids and medications are introduced into the vein.
  • The anesthetist will then take care of the anesthesia. Ifcesareanis planned, it is most often performed under so-called ductal anesthesia (spinal or epidural). If, on the other hand, the decision about caesarean section is made during labor, general anesthesia is usually used, the so-called anesthesia, consisting of full sleep.
  • Ductal anesthesia is administered through a thin catheter inserted into the space between the meninges covering the spinal cord. The catheter insertion does not hurt, but is sometimes described as unpleasant by some women. You will have to lie on your side or sit with your legs tucked up and bend your spine to facilitate precise puncture. Once the desensitization takes effect, you won't feel any pain, but you will stay awake.
  • A catheter will be placed in your bladder to drain your urine during surgery (it will be removed 12-24 hours after you give birth).
  • A special screen will be placed at the level of your stomach so that you cannot see the operator's doctor. The doctor performing the surgery will make a 10 cm horizontal incision (approx. 2-3 cm above the pubic bone) and soon remove the baby from the uterus. Some women describe this moment as a slight jerk, others have the impression that someone was washing their hands inside their bodies. OnHowever, you will definitely not feel any pain.
  • Finally, the operator will sew the notch. The entire operation usually takes 45-50 minutes. After the procedure, you will be given anticoagulants and antibiotics - in case of any infection.
  • The child's father may be in the operating room, although not in every hospital. In most Warsaw hospitals, there is no problem with this, also when it comes to public facilities. However, each hospital has its own habits - in some of them, dad will only be able to look at the room through the window.
  • If both you and your baby are in good he alth, you should be able to make your baby stagger right after birth for at least a few minutes. And immediately after being transported to the recovery room (and when the general anesthesia stops working) - you can latch the baby to the breast.
