5. week of pregnancy: how is your baby developing?
The embryo has already established itself in your uterus. For now, it looks like an oval structure, but if you look closely, you can already see the shape of the head and the rest of the body.
The whole thing is hidden in the pregnancy vesicle, which - apart from the embryo - also contains the yolk sac (which, like the corpus luteum, progesterone) and the amniotic cavity.
The yolk vesicle nourishes the embryo until the placenta is formed, while the amniotic cavity is filled with amniotic fluid in just a dozen or so days. In the 5th week of pregnancy, several important organs develop:
- the liver, kidneys, and most of all the human central nervous system appear, which means the formation of the brain and spinal cord
- the seeds of the eyes and ears form in the baby's head
- the muscles and tissues from which the baby's bones will one day develop. The placenta is already beginning to form - it soon takes on its most important role, which is nourishing the fetus
- at the end of the 5th week of pregnancy, a heart is also formed, which will soon start beating

5. week of pregnancy: what's happening to you?
In the 5th week of pregnancy, you start to suspect that you might be pregnant. The expected period has passed and no bleeding has occurred. If you've had regular cycles so far, this may be the first sign of your pregnancy.
To check if you are pregnant, go to the pharmacy and buy a home pregnancy test. It's a plastic plate and a few drops of urine are put into it.
You are now 5 weeks pregnant, i.e. in the 2nd month of pregnancy
The test detects the presence of the hCG hormone, i.e. the chorionic gonadotropin, produced by the embryo. This hormone is secreted as early as 48 hours after implantation of a fertilized egg, but it can only be detected 8-10 days after fertilization, i.e. whenits level will be high enough to be visible in the urine.
Therefore, it is worth remembering that although the reliability of the test itself, even the one performed at home, is high, the correct result may appear only after the expected period - a test performed earlier will not detect pregnancy.
If you do not believe the pharmacy tests, you can get a referral for a blood test that also shows the presence of the hormone hCG.
Another confirmation of your condition can be an ultrasound. If you've already signed up for your first gynecologist appointment and the gynecologist has an ultrasound machine in his office, he can do a vaginal exam. By the 5th week of pregnancy, the gestational sac should already be visible. However, if you are still waiting for your appointment, don't worry.
Specialists recommend that the first visit should take place until the 10th week of pregnancy, but not later, if you want to benefit from state benefits, i.e. the baby blanket.

5. week of pregnancy: the most important recommendations
If you have not taken folic acid before, be sure to start taking it. It is of great importance in the period of organogenesis - it prevents congenital defects of the neural tube.
In the second month of pregnancy, you may gain less than a kilogram. However, if you feel very sick, you may not gain weight and you may lose weight!
- Folic acid important before and during pregnancy
You do not have to reach for iron preparations yourself, although it is believed that the future mother must supplement them. This is not true - iron should only be taken by women with or at risk of anemia before pregnancy.
However, you should be prepared for the fact that, in addition to folic acid, soon you will also have to take other pregnancy supplements, the ingredients of which guarantee the proper development of the baby and strengthen your body.
- Vitamins and minerals needed in pregnancy
The doctor will prescribe them on the first visit. Until then, eat he althy: remember that your diet should be balanced, i.e. provide a lot of different ingredients. You can help yourself by looking at the he alth pyramid, which shows the correct proportions of the various nutrients: vitamins, fats, carbohydrates, proteins, etc.
