Perilla frutescens looks not very impressive because it has quite thick green or purple leaves and small bell-shaped flowers. Meanwhile, its healing properties cannot be overestimated - it is one of the best-known antiallergic plants. It soothes ailments related to, among others, with a seasonal runny nose, allergy to fur or mites, nasal congestion.

Perilla frutescens( Perilla frutescens ) occurs mainly in Asia (China, Japan, Vietnam), where it has long been it is used in folk medicine. However, thanks to its relatively easy cultivation, it is also grown in other parts of the world, including Poland. The common periwinkle is used in several ways: the healing properties of both the leaf extract and its seed oil, which contain many valuable substances that have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial and antiallergic properties.

Valuable ingredients of the common perilla

The most he alth-promoting ingredients are flavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory properties, they are also known antioxidants that neutralize free radicals, responsible for e.g. for faster aging of the body. Perilla extracts also contain anthocyanins that have a positive effect on the circulatory system, alpha-linolenic fatty acid, which has antibacterial and antioxidant properties, luteolin - has anti-inflammatory properties, has a positive effect on the nervous system and catechins, slowing down the aging processes and strengthening immunity.

However, the two most important ingredients of Perilla are quercetin and rosmarinic acid. Quercetin is classified as a flavonoid and, apart from its antioxidant effect, it also has anti-inflammatory and antihistamine properties. In turn, rosmarinic acid is known to reduce allergic symptoms and support the body in the fight against the disease. Currently, there are several ready-made preparations on the market, which were based on the extract of the perilla. They all work similarly, i.e. they regulate the action of inflammatory mediators, mainly histamine, and support the immune system. Thanks to this, they prove to be so effective in the case of chronic hay fever, allergies to pollen, allergies to dust, animal hair, detergents and ingredients.contained in cosmetics. They also work well in the case of a stuffy nose or lacrimation caused by an allergy.

Perilla: healing properties

In traditional Chinese medicine, perilla is not only used as an antiallergic agent. Extract from leaves that contain, among others iron, potassium, calcium and vitamins, are also used during respiratory ailments. It helps in the case of viral diseases, especially colds accompanied by a cough or runny nose. Sometimes it is also used as a diastolic agent, because it works well in the case of nausea and vomiting. In turn, in Japan, the common perilla, better known as shiso, found its use in the kitchen. Traditionally, it was added to fish dishes. It was famous for its detoxifying properties, because it eliminated the effects of poisoning with fish toxins. Currently, the common periwinkle is used in Asian cuisine because of its taste and intense aromatic notes. It is added to broths, meat dishes, but also e.g. roasted vegetables.

Perilla oil for skin and hair

Perilla also produces oil, which has been used in cosmetics. It can be used for all types of skin, both dry, oily, but also problematic, e.g. acne, because it has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and disinfecting properties, and thus soothes any irritation, minor damage to the epidermis, and prevents clogging of the sebaceous glands. It also turns out that thanks to its ingredients and properties, it also increases the production of collagen and elastin. In this way, it slows down the aging process of the skin, what's more, it becomes firmer and smoother. Systematically used oil also brightens discolorations. A few drops of it can also be added to the bath to increase skin elasticity and moisturize it.

The perfume is also great for hair problems, and you don't have to wait long for the results. Perilla oil is applied to the hair, after a few such treatments it should become stronger, smoother, with no tendency to break or split ends. You can also rub the oil into the skin of your hair, this way strengthens the roots, and at the same time, this treatment prevents the appearance of dandruff.
