- Find out more about the coronavirus:
COVID-19 can be a fatal disease. The mortality rate among those infected with the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has so far reached 3.4 percent. Older people with chronic diseases and men are most at risk.
The mortality rate from the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus epidemic is not as spectacular as that from the SARS and MERS epidemics at the beginning of the century.
Coronavirus - Mortality Analysis
Scientists from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, analyzing cases of infections from China, found that the average mortality rate among men infected with the coronavirus is 2.8 percent, while in women it is significantly lower - 1.7 percent. The virus attacks men and women equally. Older children (over 2 years old), whose course of the disease may be less severe, also cope well with the disease.
A similar mechanism also worked in the past. More men than women died during the Spanish pandemic.
In 2003, during the SARS epidemic in Hong Kong, the virus infected more women than men, but according to a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the death rate from infections in men was as much as 50 percent higher.
The same thing happened again during the MERS epidemic, in which approximately 32 percent of men and 26 percent of women died.
What does this result from? It has long been known that women cope better with viral infections. Their immune response to such an infection is stronger than in men. Women also produce a stronger immune response after vaccinations (they have more antibodies), and their bodies "remember" the intruder better and therefore react more efficiently when the virus attacks again.
