September is World Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month. On this occasion, the Polish Amazonki Ruch Społeczny association, as part of the "Butterflies under protection" campaign, invites you to take advantage of free prophylactic ultrasound examinations of the thyroid gland on September 17 this year. in Warsaw!

Ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland allows early detection of cancer

Although the thyroid gland is small, it is responsible for coordinating the work of almost the entire body. The mood, appearance and physical well-being depend on it. However, the thyroid gland is exposed to many diseases - from hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, through autoimmune diseases to cancer, which more and more people struggle with. One of the primary symptoms of thyroid cancer is a lump that appears in the front of the neck. The most effective method of detecting them is an ultrasound of the thyroid gland.

"Ultrasound examination is one of the basic methods of early detection of thyroid cancer. Ultrasound allows you to detect even very small changes in the structure of the gland that cannot be felt by touch. Remember that early detected changes give you a chance to react quickly. According to the accepted principles of thyroid cancer prophylaxis, it is recommended to perform an ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland once every two years ”- explains prof. Marek Dedecjus, head of the Department of Oncological Endocrinology and Nuclear Medicine, Oncology Center - Institute in Warsaw.

Small bumps of great weight

Thyroid lumps are a fairly common problem. They develop in 1 percent. men and in 6 percent. women. This means that in Poland, this problem may affect up to a million women of all ages. “If changes in the thyroid gland are found in the ultrasound examination, it is necessary to evaluate a specialist endocrinologist and possibly a thyroid biopsy. Fortunately, only a fraction of the nodules identified by ultrasound are malignant. It should be remembered, however, that any - even mild - changes in the thyroid gland should be carefully monitored "- emphasizes prof. Marek Dedecjus.

People udiagnosed with thyroid nodules should urgently see a specialist if:

  • the lump or the circumference of the neck quickly enlarged
  • there is neck pain in the area of the thyroid gland with the accompanying enlargement of the lymph nodes
  • trouble swallowing or breathing

People with a family history of thyroid cancer should be especially vigilant in the observation of diagnosed nodules.
