Since 1998, the capital of Blekinge region - Karlskrona has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is one of the most beautiful places on the B altic Sea. It was founded in 1780 by the Swedish king Charles XI as a base for the fleet in the center of the Swedish power ruling around the B altic Sea at that time. In addition to the army, many merchants settled here, maintaining lively and numerous contacts with the world, both by land and by water. The city has retained its unique, baroque urban layout, with wide streets where military parades used to take place. It fascinates by the proximity of the sea. It's fair to say that every street ends in a waterfront.
Karlskrona was built on 33 small islands which, thanks to human engineering, merged over the centuries into one larger island. As many of them have bridge connections, the archipelago can be explored by car. The center is located on the island of Trossö and this is where most tourists stop.
Interesting stories of Blekinge are worth inviting to the city museum. You can heremake many discoveries. In the Blekinge area, which is surrounded by miles of coastline and archipelago, people have always been dependent on the sea. The great exhibition of coastal culture paints a picture of people who work hard on fishing boats, hunt waterfowl, work in quarries and build boats.
In turn, the building of the Maritime Museum (Marinmuseum) was erected on the island of Stumholmen in the central part of the capital. You can get to know its dramatic and exciting story there. As you stroll through the museum, it is worth tracing the role of the fleet from the time when the Swedish B altic power was built, the beginnings of Karlskrona in the 17th century, up to the modern era. You can even get a taste of life aboard a modern submarine!

On one of the islands next to Tjurkö there is a world-class attraction, which is Kungsholms fort with a unique circular port, a collection of plants from all corners of the world and a museum of coastal artillery. The fort is still in use after 300 years, but anyone can visit it with a guide.
Aspö does not have a land connection, but the car ferry from Karlskrona commercial port is free. This island of arts and crafts is perfect for a bike trip.
