I am 16 years old and have scoliosis, I would like to take care of my figure (legs, abdomen) by myself exercising at home. However, I do not know what exercises to choose so as not to aggravate the scoliosis. Could I ask for any tips? I have a gym ball that I want to use for exercise.

Scoliosis is often confused with the scoliotic posture. Scoliosis is the curvature of the spine in three planes (frontal, sagittal and transverse). Each case has different distortions, so there is no one-size-fits-all solution. You should ask your doctor and / or physiotherapist for individually tailored exercises, who, depending on the characteristics of the curvature, will explain how not to aggravate the scoliosis in a given case. Exercise for scoliosis is a controversial topic. Some researchers believe exercise has no effect on the progression of scoliosis (Hall, 1991). Nevertheless, you should remain physically fit.

Examples of scoliosis exercises

1) from a standing position with your feet hip-width apart, make alternate lunges with the right and left legs, placing your foot as far forward as possible - with your back straight throughout the exercise,

2) placing your foot on the ball behind your back, go to the position of the so-called swallows, rolling the ball backwards, hold the position for a few seconds, slightly bending the leg to which the weight is transferred and return to the starting position,

3) Seated on the ball with your feet hip-width apart, with your back straight, alternately lift your knees towards your stomach. Start with 1 series of exercises of 8-12 repetitions on each side.

Make sure your diet is varied, full of nutrients, and has sources of fiber.
