Why is cytology necessary?
The first cytology should be done after the age of 18 or shortly after the first sexual intercourse. After that, the test should be performed once a year, and in people at genetic risk of cervical cancer, even every 6 months. The test looks for abnormal cells that are causing cancer. Early detection of these changes gives a chance of a full recovery.

What is a Pap test?
It is a simple test, practically painless and takes only a few minutes. They are performed by a gynecologist by inserting a speculum into the vagina to collect cells from the cervix with a special brush. Then the sample goes under the microscope, where the structure of the cells is assessed. If disturbing changes are noticed, the gynecologist makes decisions about further management and treatment. Incorrect result does not have to mean neoplastic changes, but diagnostics is necessary.
