Hydrocolonotherapy, i.e. deep colon irrigation, for some people is a way not only to cleanse the body of toxins, but also to lose weight. However, scientists' research shows that hydrocolonotherapy can do more harm than good. What are the pros and cons of cleansing the intestines with this method? Is hydrocolonotherapy safe?

Hydrocolonotherapy , i.e. deepcolon lavage , is a procedure that removes poisonous toxins and deposits stored in the intestine for years fecal. This is what the proponents of this method of cleansing the intestines say. They also argue that hydrocolonotherapy improves the perist altic movements of the intestines, and thus facilitates defecation. These are not the onlyadvantagesof this treatment. Hydrocolonotherapy is said to also have slimming properties, because after the treatment you are a few kilograms lighter.

Hydrocolonotherapy and enema

Hydrocolonotherapy should not be confused with an enema. An enema is a procedure to rinse the end of the colon, which consists of the rectum and the sigmoid colon. Meanwhile, hydrocolonotherapy allows you to rinse the entire colon, the length of which varies between 100 and 160 cm.

Hydrocolonotherapy - indications and contraindications for the treatment

Indications for hydrocolonotherapy include: constipation, flatulence, parasitic infections, hyperacidity, migraines, absorption disorders. The list of contraindications includes gastrointestinal bleeding, chronic enteritis, intestinal ulcers, advanced pregnancy, acute heart failure, aneurysms, arterial hypertension, abdominal hernia, kidney failure, liver cirrhosis and anemia.

Hydrocolonotherapy - how is the treatment performed?

A doctor or nurse, under the supervision of a doctor, introduces a tube into the anus, to which two plastic hoses are connected: one, through which approx. 60 liters of heated, filtered and disinfected water under the appropriate pressure are introduced into the intestine, and the second, which drains the washed content out of the intestine. After that, the pipes are connected to a special device that is directly connected to the sewage system. The treatment takes an average of 45 minutes and costs from 150 to 300 PLN.

After lavage of the colon, supplementation is recommendedbacterial flora.

As advocates of hydrocolonotherapy argue, during the first treatment it is not possible to completely clean the intestines, because first the sections closest to the mouth of the intestine are cleaned, and only then those further up to the cecum and appendix. Therefore, they recommend a series of 3-4 or even 12 treatments.

Is hydrocolonotherapy a way to lose weight?

Hydrocolonotherapy is not a slimming treatment. Not always after the treatment, you weigh less than before, because only part of the deposits is washed away during the treatment. There is still some water in the intestine that was not removed during the procedure. Therefore, hydrocolonotherapy can only be treated as a treatment supporting the treatment of overweight or obesity, and only when other methods of supporting weight loss are used, i.e. proper diet and exercise.

Is hydrocolonotherapy safe?

According to studies conducted by doctors from the University of Georgetown, there is no scientific basis or research confirming the effectiveness of hydrocolonotherapy. There is, however, scientific evidence that the procedure can have dangerous side effects.

Hydrocolonotherapy may help to wash out mineral s alts, disturb electrolyte balance, and then dehydrate the body, which may lead to anemia and malnutrition if the procedure is performed too often. And if you use water mixed with coffee for rinsing, cardiological problems such as heart failure and heart attacks can occur. Also on the list of side effects is kidney failure, a condition in which the kidneys do not filter the right amount of toxins and waste from the blood.

The claim that colon lavage improves perist altic movements is also incorrect. According to researchers, the opposite is true - hydrocolonotherapy may contribute to the laxity of the intestine and the loss of the ability to defecate on its own. In addition, the natural bacterial flora is also flushed with the contents of the intestines, which hinders the entire digestive process.

In addition, hydrocolonotherapy may end with damage to the intestinal wall or even perforation, caused by improperly used equipment. The risk is also the possibility of infection with amoebiasis due to poorly sterilized device. Contaminated water used in the treatment is also a danger. There are known reports of infections resulting in the patient's death.

Important

If you decide to undergo hydrocolonotherapy, remember that the procedure should be performedonly on the basis of a medical recommendation and only by qualified medical personnel (necessary in the presence of a doctor) in a treatment room that meets the requirements of sanitary and medical supervision.
