English Bulldog is a breed known to everyone who has watched at least one episode of the series "Cop and Prosecutor". English Bulldogs evoke a smile on the face and certain associations - this is a lazy, fat, gentle dog who spends all day on the couch. And what is the English bulldog like?
English Bulldog , which not everyone knows, however, is a breed that has a very turbulent history. Former ancestors of stable, friendly animals are dogs bred for fighting bulls in the arena, hunting large game or guarding slaves.
English Bulldogs are probably descended from ancient molossians and were originally fighting dogs. From antiquity, through the Middle Ages until the 19th century, they were used for dog fighting.
Only recently the breed began to be bred for the selection of gentle individuals.
They appeared in Poland in the 19th century, but the first breeding was established in the 1970s.
English Bulldog: Character and Behavior
The English Bulldog has a very calm, balanced character and a moderate temperament. Despite the fact that his ancestors were warriors, today this breed is considered exceptionally gentle and lovable. For this reason, it is an excellent companion dog. Dog training guides emphasize that this breed is intelligent, but very stubborn. Therefore, her training takes time and patience. In order to control the English bulldog at home, it is necessary to show him who is the master here very quickly, firmly, though gently. If this is successful, he will be a faithful companion and exemplary family member.
English Bulldog: Appearance
It can be safely considered quite peculiar. Bulldogs have a head disproportionately large in relation to the body, wide and square. Its circumference was calculated to be the height at the withers. The muzzle is broad and short, the forehead furrow is deep. The neck is also short, turning into a muscular torso.
The silhouette of the dog appears to be stocky and squat. Massive limbs, slightly shorter than the hind legs, and a short, low-set tail complete the impression of strength and stability.
Dogs of this breed are not very tall: they reach 40 cm at the withers and weigh up to 25 kg.
Apart from this massive, slightly menacing figure, the most distinctive feature of a bulldog's appearance is its folds. Skin from mouth to neck to backthese dogs is folded. This creates an impression of softness and gentleness.
And these dogs, in fact, are. The coat of bulldogs is short and dense, and the color is rather uniform, mainly red and fawn, also brindle.
English Bulldog: care
Bulldogs are short-haired dogs, combing them should not be troublesome. The dog is bathed and its claws are cut off as needed.
The owners must pay special attention to cleaning and drying the folds. Otherwise, around the nose and back, chafes and fungal infections can occur.
Important! The skin around the folds on the bulldog's skin should always be dry. It can be cared for with special preparations, e.g. in the form of wet wipes, or washed and wiped with a soft cloth.
English Bulldog: Nutrition
English Bulldogs are a gluttonous type, so they struggle with being overweight. In nutrition, it is better to avoid feeding with treats or table scraps.
Ready-made feeds work best. They are balanced, intended for specific types of animals.
If you decide on a regular home menu, it is worth supplementing it with vitamin and mineral preparations.
English Bulldog: he alth
Bulldogs are quite a demanding breed and breeders need to be prepared for a long list of potential ailments.
Dogs do not tolerate high temperatures well, so in summer you need to protect them from overheating.
Representatives of this breed, due to their specific build, also have breathing problems and spine defects.
The very development of breeding can be a complicated matter due to fairly common problems with reproduction: the mortality of puppies is high.
