My wife (59) has had hepatic colic pains four times in the last 3 months. These pains occur in a quite characteristic way, i.e. They start in the morning (around 3-5 o'clock), are accompanied by "belching" and bitterness in the mouth. After taking the diastolic drug and the analgesic suppository after some time (+/- 1 hour) the symptoms largely disappear. Then for a dozen or so days, calm and again colic. This cycle occurs despite the strict diet that the wife immediately followed. More than 2 years ago, my wife had a gallbladder removed. Since then, she had no pain problems, but bitterness in her mouth and "belching" appeared during the treatment for osteoporosis (FOSAMAG drug). As the liver tests gave increased indications (other tests were normal), she also performed ultrasound, tomography and gastroscopy - these tests did not reveal any lesions. After several months of pharmacological liver treatment, liver tests performed that summer showed a significant improvement. Unfortunately, the first attack occurred in mid-September (a little earlier my wife ate mushrooms 2-3 times). The doctor, suspecting cholelithiasis, ordered an MRI and then a full colonoscopy - these tests also showed nothing that could be the cause of these ailments. My wife is on a strict diet all the time, she does not know what can harm her, as a result she lost weight and weakened and I feel helpless. I am asking the Doctor for an opinion.
The described ailments do make us suspect cholelithiasis. The cause may also be spastic (contraction) conditions appearing in these ducts. As for the diet, there is often a tendency to underestimate what is hard to digest. In this case, the classic dietary mistake was eating mushrooms - a classic example of a heavy food that produces bouts of hepatic colic. A strict diet - followed each day with every meal and bite - usually brings improvement. Many people will not be careful to "taste" a spoonful of Christmas bigos while preparing it - and that is enough to trigger a colic attack. There are two principles to your well-being - carefully following your doctor's instructions and strictly following your diet.
