Pedophilia, no matter how severely we judge it, is just another disease that needs to be treated. How is pedophilia treated? Can a pedophile be cured?

Pedophiliais a mental disorder belonging to the group of sexual deviations (paraphilias). Pedophilia refers to sexual behavior or fantasies related to children before puberty - under the age of 13. All too often, acts of pedophilia occur in the family - for example, the father or uncle in relation to the girl turns out to be a pedophile.

Who is a pedophile?

Pedophilesexually abuses children. Worse, in most cases, the pedophile is a person close to the child, someone whom the child trusts. In modern Europe, pedophilia is condemned by everyone: ordinary people and the greatest authorities. A pedophile is someone who is at least 16 years old or 5 years older than an injured child. Statistically 90 percent of pedophiles are men. It is a mistake to link pedophilia with homosexuality, first of all, because as many as 95 percent of acts of pedophilia are heterosexual, and only 5 percent are homosexual. A pedophile requires help, but also isolation from potential victims.

Pedophilia treatment methods

Treatments for pedophilia include:

  • chemical castration,
  • psychotherapy,
  • pharmacotherapy
  • preventive programs aimed at early detection of potential perpetrators and sensitizing the society, especially children, to bad touch

From a medical point of view, forced chemical castration of people who have been proven to be pedophilia is a mistake - it is only symptomatic, not targeting the main cause, which is a personality disorder.

Worth knowing

Pedophilia: from acceptance to condemnation

In ancient culture, Greek pedophilia was fully accepted. Nowadays, there are also cultures in which pedophilia is treated like any other sexual behavior - e.g. in the Eipo tribe living in New Guinea, sexual contacts of adult men with children of all ages are accepted. Some cultures still accept marriage with underage girls. G. de Rais, Marshal of France who lived in the 15th century, had pedophilic contacts with several hundred boys, of whom he killed about 200. They were widespread in eighteenth-century Englandbrothels of pedophilic nature. In modern Europe, pedophilia is severely condemned - the most severe punishments, including castration, are expected to be imposed on pedophiles.
