Hearing implant placement is the beginning of a child with a profound hearing loss on the way to developing hearing ability. After the procedure, proper rehabilitation is of key importance for the development of hearing and speech. Thanks to it, the little patient will feel the greatest benefits from the implant.

How long does it take to see the effects?

It should be remembered that the length of rehabilitation depends on the individual predispositions of the patient. Usually, the first effects of work appear after 7-8 months. This process may take longer in some children, and shorter in others. It is important not to be discouraged by failures and not to give up exercise. Nor should you rest on your laurels. Even if the child is doing great on his own, he still requires the help of parents and therapists so that the results of his work are not wasted. The entire rehabilitation process in some children ends after a few years, in others only after a dozen or so. However, it is worth being patient, because the effects reward every hour spent on exercise. Patients recognize the sound sources very well, begin to hear more clearly, and thus speak more fluently and articulate their thoughts more precisely.

However, in order to achieve real success, properly conducted rehabilitation is necessary. It is worth being patient, because the results will reward you with the time you spend on it.

First: practice

Rehabilitation exercises after implantation of the hearing implant should be started as soon as possible, even before the implant surgery. Parents in this task are supported by speech therapists, but it is mainly them who determine the regularity and correct course of the whole process. Specialists and therapists will be helpful in determining the method of rehabilitation and selecting exercises. They tell the parents of the child how to effectively train their hearing, and also exercise themselves together with the patient.

Second: exercise regularly

Regularity is very important. Classes with therapists take place several times a week for several dozen minutes. On the other hand, the child's caregivers should exercise with the child every day to use the sound processor as often as possible. There are simple tasks for this.

Rehabilitation should begin with teaching the child to recognize the source of the sound. If the telephone rings, point the toddler to the object and explain that the signal is coming from it. After some time, the little patient should be able to determine the origin of the sound himself. Even if he fails, you need to calmly explain the error and encourage him to continue working. Importantly, all exercises should be performed at the child's height. - Working with young children is primarily on the floor - says Dr. Marlena Kurowska, speech therapist working at the "ECHO" Foundation. -The child is then in such a safe area. When we greet him, we are at the same level of his height and eyesight. This is a very important element, because when we stand and look at the child from above, we are not partners. An excellent exercise for a child is to recognize the sounds of many animals. In this way, the toddler learns to associate a given sound with a picture with a specific animal. It is important to talk to the child all the time so that he also learns new words.
