The fear of COVID-19 has led to a phenomenon that is surprising for doctors. Doctor Paweł Grzesiowski - pediatrician, immunologist, vaccination expert and president of the board of the Institute for Vaccination Prevention Foundation - talks about the dangerous effect of the pandemic, which affects more and more patients.
Concerns about hospitalization in times of a pandemic mean that many people delay treatment, postpone treatment until the last minute, and even ignore and hide the symptoms of various diseases from doctors and loved ones. The effects of such irresponsible behavior are already becoming visible.
Doctor Grzesiowski about the unexpected effect of COVID-19
Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski in an interview with Bartosz Wróblewski from "Poradnik Zdrowie" talked about the surprising effect of COVID-19:
My colleagues tell me, for example in surgery, that they have not seen such specimens of neglected surgical diseases for years. Because people wait until the last moment, for example, with a huge gallbladder inflamed and it is almost sepsis. A lot of such cases were seen in the past, but this was in the post-war era. And now we have had situations where the patients were diagnosed earlier, they were brought to the table and operated on in a good condition. Again, the motive to postpone hospitalization until the last moment came back. When there is literally a scythe on the neck, the patients only decide to go to the hospital.
Often not because of the lack of places, but because of fear?
Yes, for fear of catching COVID-19 in the hospital and dying there.
