Recently, after the preventive examinations, it turned out that I have an elevated bilirubin level -1.66mg / dl. Is this a sign of some disease? Could it be related to the diet? If so, what should I avoid to keep my bilirubin down?
Hello,
The most common cause of a mild, asymptomatic bilirubin elevation in young people, usually detected during follow-up examinations, is Gilbert's syndrome - a mild genetic disorder of bilirubin metabolism. It concerns 5-7 percent. population and is more common in men. Factors that increase bilirubin (the appearance of yellowing of the skin) include physical exertion, stress, fever, starvation, alcohol consumption, drug use, eating fatty foods, and negative feelings. Therefore, the most important thing in Gilbert's syndrome is to avoid the above-mentioned circumstances. This disease requires no treatment other than avoiding the factors mentioned above. Of course, it is advisable for a physician to confirm that Gilbert's syndrome is the cause of a bilirubin elevation (there may be other causes as well).
