- diaphoretic plants: elderberry
Diaphoretic plants have been used for centuries in folk medicine in all latitudes to support the treatment of symptoms of colds, flu and other infections. How do diaphoretic plants work? Which diaphoretic plants are especially appreciated by us?
Diaphoretic plantsare plants which, thanks to their ingredients, stimulate our sweat glands to work more intensively. Profuse sweating helps not only reduce high body temperature (fever), but also remove pathogenic microorganisms from the body.
This is why diaphoretic herbs are most often recommended for infections with a symptom of fever, e.g.
- flu
- anginie
- COVID-19
- pneumonia
- pharyngitis
- cold - if it is accompanied by an increase in temperature.
The use of diaphoretic plants is also considered in patients who need to relieve the kidneys and quickly remove toxins and harmful metabolic products through the skin.
Here are 4 diaphoretic plants that are most often used in Poland.
diaphoretic plants: raspberry
The proper raspberry (aka raspberry) is the most mysterious of all diaphoretic plants. We use both raspberry fruits and leaves for medicinal purposes, but the fruits show the main diaphoretic properties.
They contain:
- sugars
- organic acids
- mallow compounds
- pectins
- iron
- copper
- vitamin A
- vitamin B2
- vitamin C
- vitamin PP
But attention! So far, it has not been possible to isolate and determine the substance in raspberry fruits that causes them to increase sweating. It is known, however, that this reaction occurs after 0.5 to 1 hour after drinking an infusion of raspberry fruit or raspberry juice.
Raspberries - other uses:
- to treat anemia (anemia)
- as a remedy against diarrhea

Silver birch , known in Poland more simply as white birch, has been used for centuries - especially birch sap (!) - as a strengthening plant. Healing properties were found in both its leaves and buds, juice and the so-called boils, i.e. lumpy growths on the trunks of these trees.
Birch leaves have the most significant features, which include:
- saponins
- flavonoids

diaphoretic plants: elderberry
Black elderberry(in other words: no medicine, no pharmacy) is a medicinal plant popular almost all over the world. For medicinal purposes, all parts of this plant are used: flowers, fruit, as well as leaves and bark.
Interestingly, as in the case of raspberries, there is also a compound in elderberry fruit that is responsible for their diaphoretic properties, but so far it has not been identified. It is known, however, that elderberry fruits contain, among others :
- ritual that strengthens and seals blood vessels
- chlorogenic acids, which help with allergies, balance blood sugar levels and cleanse the body of toxins
- potassium to regulate the heart and prevent puffiness
Elderberry fruit is recommended as a diaphoretic, but in the case of various types of autumn and winter infections, it is also worth reaching for the flower extract of this plant. Used externally to rinse the throat, it effectively relieves throat pain.
